I am glad the Governor caught a fish this
weekend. I did not catch a fish. I saw
a guy catch one and that was it.
Fished the west side with my dad and a couple
of his buddys who always get together and
fish the opener on LOW. We stayed pretty
close to Springsteel on saturday. Every
time we went out it would start to rain and
we would go in until it quit.
We made a couple of drifts right off Springsteel point (I said we didnt go far)
thats where I saw a fish caught. It cleared
up for a while in the PM on saturday
so we went over past the blinker and worked
our way back to the west until it started
raining again. So we called it a day.
Sunday was nice and sunny with just a tiny
hint of warmth in the air. We went over to
Elm Point and anchored up in 14 feet of
water and jigged for an hour and a half.
we called "15 minute rule" twice but got
2 bites that started the clock ticking again.
The bites were real bites but more of the
Perch variety.
We then went way back up into that corner
to the left of Elm and worked our way back
starting in 2 and half feet of water and finished out in front of Toms Bay with nary
another bite.
Packed up and went home.
Had alot of fun fishin with the fellas. Gordy is the oldest at 80, Dads in his low
70s and Jack is in his mid to late 60s. I
had to come home, they will stay up there
for week and a half so they get to be there
when things settle down and the fish start
biting.
I havent heard but I will bet things were
better over on the East side of the lake
in the Gaps.
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

I didn't get a chance to head out Saturday, but went out around today for a couple of hours. I caught a nice 20 inch and threw another smaller one back. Both were in the 8'-12' range. It should pick up once the water heats up a bit.

Was out today from 8:30 to 3:00. Veerry slow! Wife got 1 walleye about 16" and I caught a 19" football smallmouth off Elm Pt. I thought I had a nice 'eye when I set the hook, but was somewhat shocked when I saw the smallie. The smallie didn't put up a normal smallmouth battle so you know they were sluggish. 8 more degrees in the water and they will start snappin'.
later,
toddb

I was up to Springsteel this weekend also. Curt, I saw you saturday morning about 11:00. We were in the blue/white silverline, i was the [PoorWordUsage] standing up in the back of the boat when it was raining a little bit. You were a little too far away to yell at.
I didn't even get a bite. we were just northwest of springsteel saturday morning and then went straight out from springsteel in the afternoon. maybe we'll get into em' in a week or two when it warms up a bit.

Tied you Curt!! When the temp reached 45 towards noon we lauched the boat and headed for the lake. A small pack was in front of the washout at Morris and a big pack along Pine. In two hours we had two bites and saw nary a net. The radio traffic was mostly bad and more bad. I marked quite a few fish in 17-20 feet but no bites. It was a good weekend to get the cabin spruced up and I was pleased my lady was willing to jump in the boat--only her second year of fishing and thinks the summer bouncer/spinner bite is more fun.
Hope the water clears up/warms up by next weekend. It was 41-42.
Good luck to all.

Well I was over fishing out of the gap and we didn't do very well either. I actually didn't catch a fish all weekend. We had a pretty good start though so I thought it was going to be a good opener. My dad and friend caught 2 nice walleye within about the first 10 minutes of fishing in about 7 to eight feet of water straight out of the gap. Things slowed up until my stepmom caught a keeper fish sometime late afternoon. We caught enough for supper.
Sunday we only caught one small keeper and one throw back.
I really didn't mind though since it's just so nice to be out on the water and back at it again. It'll be nice though when it's not so busy. It was just crazy up their! We did see the governor in the Team crestliner boat. I didn't find out until later that was the boat he was in, but we new something was up when one boat moved out and suddenly a herd of boats was following.
I felt like maybe I wasn't completely inept when we were fishing over by Gary Roach off of Pine Island and it looked like he was throwing in the towel.
I'll be up again for Friday through Tuesday for memorial day weekend.
Ryan

Hines,
I hear you there. I was skunked all day Saturday and most of Sunday. Thought I hooked into a pig and turned out to be a big pout. Didn't see anyone else doing much either. It was a wet ride getting back to the river!
Tully

Hmmmmm...Sounds like a tough bite all over! I was at Zipple Bay, Three of us in my boat, Three in my brothers boat...The first drift we had a 17" and a 22" eye and a 15 inch sauger!! Then it was pretty slim pickens the rest of the day...My boat ended up with 6 eyes...14",16"17"17"20.5"&22". two saugers 13" & 15"...my brothers boat ended up with 4 eyes and one sauger...I think if the sun would have stayed out it would have been much better!! But then it's only going to get better!!

I was fishing the gap at morris point on Sunday and didn't catch one walleye! I marked a few fish in 17-20 feet of water, but could'nt get em' to to bite anything, and I tried everything except crankbaits (however I almost tried that too!) I did manage to catch a 36" northern in four mile bay. So atleast I caught something.
When I came in to load up, I notice a boat with alot of water running out of it, and I do mean ALOT! Looks like someone found a deadhead?
Oh well, hopefully it will pick up soon.
------------------
CatMan

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike. Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River. Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently. Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn. Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options. Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues. A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise. Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale. The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st. Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing. One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker. Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle... A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water. In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener. Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years. Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads. Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water. Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad. Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
