First I would like to thank Guideman, Bornofice and Vermilion fox for helping me out with this trip. We fished Wed night thru Sat. night and caught 20 smallmouth and 25 Walleyes I would say that the fishing was on the slow side but from 7pm til dark the pace was a lot faster but you had to make a decision as to cast for smallies or troll for Walleyes this is a very difficult decision for me since I love both. If you are fishing V for the first time. cont.

I would highly recomend hiring a guide for at least a half a day, before you get frustrated and move on because this lake is easy once you know what the guides know but can be very frusrating to the first timers.
Temps were in the 90s with high blue skys and very little wind except for sat late afternoon we had 15 mph out of the S. from 5pm -8pm. The lack of wind and clouds shut down my daytime bite that I have been bragging about. Cont.

The Lindy Rig was still working early in the Morning But the fish we caught were on steep breaks and I had to switch from the Plain hook to a floating jig to keep from getting hung up and N-crawlers were are most productive bait. The best smallie fishing was in the Eve. with Tubes and Topwaters catching most of are fish. Our biggest Smallie was caught with Guideman and was 16 in. all smallies were released. The walleye bite was slow but a hour before and after sunset was hot. Cont.

We Trolled Walleye divers in fire tiger and perch patterns around the Islands in big bay. The keys for us were to troll from 2.5 to 3 mph and to tickle the bottom (12ft) without getting hung up(very tricky) but once the patern was established it continued
we caught several 14 to 19 in. fish with a bonus 23in® on the last night. We took home 9 walleyes for dinner for our two families and ate them last nite. Had a great time. CJ

Hey Guideman,
and all of you guys who like funny stories. my handicap and my fishing partner this past weekend was johny who we call Magoo like Mr Magoo because if johny walks off the end of the pier a boat would be going by and he would fall into the boat. anyway guideman I told you he was lucky, john hit a $500 dollar jackpot on a nickle slot machine at the casino fri. night. here comes the funny storie cont.

so he pours himself a cup of coffee and I look at him and he looks like he is about to pass out. I ask him if he would like to go back to the casino and he says he just needs to relax a minute so I start fishing. after about 5 minutes I look back at him and he is slouched in his seat with his chin on his chest sleeping, he was holding his thermos top full of coffee against his body at about chest high as he falls into a slumber the coffee spills out cont

Glad to hear that you worked you butts off to catch what you did. Sounds like John, and guideman out fished you this week smile.gif.

The walleye bite was typical for the summer hit through out the region. As you said find the spot within the spot. And again within that spot.....

I must agree that learning the body of water is a tough process and the guides up there are key to the success of us first/second timers. I will definintely be hooking up with one next year when I go up. Know any good ones guideman wink.gifsmile.gif

CJ we need to hook up next year in the spring to hit the river (lake Wisconsin). Guideman, Ken K and you are more than welcome to join me in one of these events. Keep in mind we are talking March and April for the fun.

Great fishing on the big V to all.

CJ

Sounds like you had a great trip. I guess we all need to remember it's not the numbers, it's the experience. Even when I don't catch fish on the big V or anywhere I always remenber to enjoy the beauty Mother Nature provides.
By the way it's always easier to explain the blistered privates when you have a $500 slot jackpot in hand!!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
