Hey guys,
I am heading up to Vermilion this weekend for a week of hardcore fishing action. I was wondering how the bite has been for all species, primarily walleye, muskie, and northerns? I plan on staying on the east end at the Glenmore resort. I was wondering if there is any hot lures or presentations this year on the lake that are producing fish or if the old stand bys are still producing the fish. Any feedback, or last minute advice is greatly appreciated. Well the countdown is on.

Keep those poles bending!!

Jason,
Seems like the same type of stuff, take both leeches and crawlers when walleye fishing but pretty much fish how you always have, your hardcore so you will be just fine!!

This is for any of you. What are some of your favorite spinner colors to use on Vermilion? I have had a lot of luck with hammer copper with a silver stripe, also red and white on Vermilion. Also do you prefer chain weights or bottom bouncers on V? I have used chain weights in the past, but have been tempted to use bottom bouncers alot more because of the rocks. If you like bottom bouncers, what size do you reccomend?

Good Fishing

That copper color has been going pretty good , yellow char. , silver. when the bite is on it doesnt seem to matter , plain lindy has been the most consistent. I would go with the 12" or 9" bouncer, the fish have been up a ways off the bottom...hope that helps.

Hi Jason, I will also be up on the big V this weekend. I like to use lindy rigs with a 5-6 foot leader and a red bead in front of a plain hook. Try all your live bait combinations until you find the code my guess is leaches. I like to fish sunken island and reefs in big bay Try both tops and edges. Also try trolling cranks the last 3 hours of the day I like Stonich out in big bay where are you staying. CJ

fishin fool,
Last year I had some luck jigging in the later part of July, mostly just nice eaters, 15-17". Still fun to catch. It was mostly on a chart. lead head and minnow. I have a feeling that I will be doing a lot more trolling and drifting this year, though.

I will be sure to get back to you on how I did.

Good Luck
Jason

CJ,
Yeah that sounds great. We can at least hook up on the water, meet each other, and talk some fishing. I will be in a resort boat. I am sure I will be out with my brother in law. How long are you staying up there? My email is [email protected], if you want to talk some more. I am not as familiar with the East side of the lake. The last 8 or so years we have stayed on the West side.

Talk to you soon
Jason

Thanks CJ,
I will be staying at the Glenmore Resort with my family. Do you use Shad Raps? If so what colors do you prefer? I do have some Lindy Rigs ready to go, I will be sure to try the red bead. I have used red beads before when long lining for walleyes. Hope to see you out on the water.

Hey there Walleye#1, We're going up to the big V on 8/14 and will be staying not too far from the Glenmore Resort. My friend and his wife are going up on 8/7 and staying the same place we will. Have you ever tried vertical jiggig up there? We do real well in the spring up there but I'm not sure about this time of year.. I'll probably be draggin raps & long linin' mostly.
Well we wish you good luck and say Hi to the new owner up there at Glenmore, A real nice guy origanally from Shakopee, cant remember his name but I'll stop and say Hi when we get up there. Let me know how you do up there..

Hey Jason, I like to use Walleye divers but Shad Raps should work just as well. Colors that have worked the best Are fire tiger ,perch and chartruse and trolled rather fast. Look for me around the 3 islands in the middle of big bay. I have a red alumacraft with a 45hp Honda. Hope we can hook up.

Hi Jason, the walleye have been good most of the week. My partner had very
good luck with a small floater and a #6
red hook. They caught all the fish on crawlers. Most of the action was in the 18 to 35ft range on deep windblown points and shoreline. The main lake humps and island points were also good.

See ya monday!..... smile.gif

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
