fishing reports

Recommended Posts

Hey, i will be heading up to the big pond this weekend 3/19-3/21 for the second time this year, was there the first time in December and did pretty good out of adrian's and zipple bay. I was wondering how well these two locations have been producing recently or if i should try a new resort to go out of, any info would be appreciated greatly. thanks

Chris: Check back a few threads and look for anything that Fisky, Widetrack and Matt Johnons may have posted. They had some good information on the bite. It sounded pretty iffy off the regular roads unless you are running sleds. there is still a fair amount of snow on the lake. I pulled up the long range forecast yesterday from that area, and snow is in the forecast at aboutn 30-40% each day. Hope you have a good trip. Good luck and hang on. Bill

Chris: Also take a look at the thread titled fishing reports. Whiskers Guide Service and several others have some good info there as well.
I'll be there about the same time and running out of Riverbend. They have bombers running over Pine and the houses should be in pretty good water right now. Bill

Chris, I was up this past weekend and fishing was really slow, not like December was. I fished on Arneson reef and out on Adrians road. I have a 4x4 Tahoe and every time we went off the main road we were stuck. People just gave up and fished right on Adrians road. I wouldnt go up again this year unless you have a sled or are getting a ride in a bomber. We caught 1 fish for every 10 we caught in Dec. Just my opinion, DrJ.

Just a quick report from Zipple. Fished Sat and Sunday and in a word SLOW but hey we still caught some fish. Mostly saugers and a few walleyes mixed in. Pink and glow angels eyes tipped with a whole shiner. Just a minnow head did not produce. Caught a few on a glow jig-a-bit under a bobber.
The folks at Zipple Bay Resort have done a very good job with the roads out from their resort. There was a sign that after the 15th they were not going to plow out o their last set of houses. Just going to plow to the houses in shallower water which is in my best estimation probably ok. Just call and check with the resorts or ask the experts here.
Jay R

Well i was really looking forward to come up to low this weekend, but now i am not so sure. are the fish really that slow to the point where it might not be worth making a 4.5 hour drive up there like mentioned in a recent post. any info is appreciated.thanks

Hey guys this time of year usually has reliable fishing in most of the usual late ice spots. Last weekends dismal reports from just about everyone and everywhere were due most likely to the temps plummeting 40+ degrees at the end of the week. At least that's what I'm blaming my lack of success on! A stable weather pattern for a day or 3 and they should start snappin' again.
You won't know if you don't go! I bet you'd hate to miss a decent bite and end up just reading about it here.
Fisky

Chris: As Fisky said the front last week didn't do the fishing a lot of good. I'm leaving St Cloud on Thursday morning, so I understand the 4 1/2 hour ride. i see that you live here also.
We had trouble witht he crappies down here last Saturday after a banner night on Thursday before the front came in. The weather has stabilized again and nothing drastic in the forecast for the next few days. I hope you get a chance to go and get into good fish. Good luck and hang on. Bill

We fished LOW on March 7 & 8 and catching was very slow to non-existent. The guides at the resort we stayed at said fishing had been poor for "2 and 1/2 weeks" and they were very tired of all the grumbling from the customers. We had a good time, as usual, and weren't among the grumblers.
I've been up to the big lake 4 times this year (2 out of Baudette and 2 @ NW Angle). It's my opinion that the bite is not near what it was last year. I would just say "OK" overall.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike. Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River. Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently. Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn. Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options. Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues. A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise. Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale. The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st. Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing. One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker. Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle... A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water. In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener. Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years. Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads. Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water. Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad. Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
