Just got back from LOW and the fishing was pretty good. A lot of walleyes and saugers, as well as some jumbo perch, tulipees, and a few pout. Went out about 6.5 miles from Adrians road. Biggest fish was a 29 incher...
47b4dc08b3127cceb9281cf271820000008610
Lost another big one below the ice. Other then that most of the fish were smaller but good eaters. Caught a good majority of my fish on a plain hook with a split shot about 10 inches up and a minnow hooked upside down. Also caught quite a few on the 1/8oz white/blue Glow Devil tipped with a minnow head. The ICE Series should be good in a couple weeks, I'm looking forward to it!
Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson
------------------
First Choice Guide Service
[email protected]
Iceleaders
Catch-N Tackle and Bio Bait
MarCum
Stone Legacy

Thanks Matt
I'm going up in two weeks for our annual trip. I'm wondering what time of day is the best walleye/sauger bite, and are you fishing known structures or random locations.
Thanks

About 31 feet of water over a flat, there is a large underwater bar nearby as well. We caught fish most of the day, but the best times were about noon to 2pm the last couple days when I was there. Sometimes you had to deadstick in order to catch fish, they didn't want a lot of movement and if you jigged the fish would go away. I had luck by raising my minnow on a plain hook and letting it slowly fall, then I would let it just sit there for a couple minutes, seemed to work pretty good when the fish came through. I hooked my minnow upside down because that way the fish didn't have to move a lot to eat the struggling minnow. The minnow was constantly trying to upright itself but couldn't, a perfect display of an injured minnow and an easy meal for those walleyes and saugers. You can also rig up an Ice Buster bobber and cut it down so it is barely a float, that works too.
Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson
------------------
First Choice Guide Service
[email protected]
Iceleaders
Catch-N Tackle and Bio Bait
MarCum
Stone Legacy

Matt: Good report, and a nice fish. We were east of you during this time in Riverbends houses and found pretty much the same thing you did, no magic lures lots of experimenting and patience. Hope things hold together up there for a few more weeks. Bill

Were you guy’s mobile? Or did you fish out of a permanent? We will be up this weekend with the 7X14 Bar on wheels. I will through the portable in also, but I do like to fish in style, DVD, Playstation. Portable only fits 2 and there will be 3 of us going. Hope this warm weather holds. Sure would be nice to post some similar pic's. Thanks for the great report Matt.

Matt, just wondering how you hook the minnow to keep it upside down? I'll be up there next week and would like to try that if the bite gets slow. Thanks!

spud
we were hooking our minnows upside down, in and out of the same side just under and back from the dorsal fin, don't hit the vitals, this way they squirm like crazy. seems that the fish liked this because we didn't have to jig much.

I like to hook it closer to the tail, that way you don't kill the minnow and it struggles more too. The minnow's head really gets going and that triggers a lot of fish into striking.
Here's another pic of the fish...
47b4dc08b3127cceb9281cf3f0b30000004610

Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson
------------------
First Choice Guide Service
[email protected]
Iceleaders
Catch-N Tackle and Bio Bait
MarCum
Stone Legacy

Central America. Focus. We almost went for a local overnight crappie run but the daughter’s septic froze so I got to work the brown trout pond through a 4 inch hole. It was opener today afterall. 😉

Ok, how did we get from crappies and freezing temps to pond slime eaters in south America? Focus! 🙄

The locals there shoot ducks but don't hunt them. If they see a bunch on a pond they'll sneak up and water swat them but it's strictly for food not sport. My buddy runs an outfitter so him and I will hunt a few days and scout then I'll help him with a group whose coming mid week. He's from there. Hoping he can come to Canada next year with me. He's never seen or shot a goose

Awesome kind of trip! I figured there would be a local benefit if you couldn’t bring them back (not saying you can’t). Having a connection down there is pretty cool! We donated a good share of meat to the village in Kotzebue, AK instead of shipping it all back. Pretty pricey and they really appreciated it. Win/win.

I don't bring them back, eat a lot then clean them for the village. Some like them plucked and some like the breasts cut out. It's really remote where I go and the locals live off the land. I know they want me to go get some doves for them too. My buddy is a local so we'll probably go get a deer as well for some venison for some of the elders in the community
