Another good trip to the north country. We came back with 57 mixed eyes and Sauger along with some jumbo perch and a few whitefish. We fished in one of a couple of houses that Glenn had moved back a little shallower, 26' of water. The highlight of the trip was my son's friend who does not get a chance to fish much except to come with us once a year to LOW caught a 28" eye on Saturday morning at 730am. its the largest fish he has ever caught, after a couple of pictures he opted to let her go. God was she a beauty, big and fat.
We had a lot of lookers too that would chase the jigs but just wouldn't hit it. Glenns deeper houses did not do as well. The fish were caught on a variety of lures, including Angel Eyes, AE jrs, and Buckshot Rattle. Jigging out produced the dead sticks, however several nice fish came off of small crappie jigs, tipped with a shiner.
The snow is still present, but it was starting to get sicky, a couple of areas of slush on the Bomber trails. Glenn is starting to move some houses back shallower as there is a pressure ridge that he wants to be across in case the weather doesn't cool down and things get to be a real mess. Our next scheduled trip in March 25 thru March 27 which is going to depend greatly on the next couple of weeks temps.
It sure was a beautiful few days with fantastic sunsets, cold beer at the lodge and great food. Good luck to all and hang on. Bill

Sounds like a good time Bill. I was wondering when the fish would start moving back in.Wish i could go every weekend. The ice fishing here on Lake Pepin is nothing short of BAD. It's always a good time up north.

BobD. I agree with you on the good times up there. I too wish I was about 2 hours closer. I have a permanent on Mille Lacs and I would move it there if it wasn't for the fact that its a 5 hour haul out of St Cloud. Just hoping for some colder weather to prolong the season. Bill

BT - sound like another good trip - envious of that 28 incher, but glad your son's friend enjoyed it - were it me you'd have heard me holler from St Cloud!
I'd trade that 5 hrs for my 8 any day, and if I could make a living up there I'd sure think about moving. Hope the weather will hold for you - it's been in the forties for a few days down South and the ice on some local lakes is getting marginal I hear.... Maybe iffy late March but wish you luck!

New Yank: We were talkiing about your in the house one afternoon. I was telling my son Dan about your trip up with the family, and your 8 hour ride came up. Yes the 3 hours less driving time makes a major difference. I agree with living up there as well. I keep thinking maybe retire and head that way, always looking one never knows what may happen.
Its in the forties here today as well, not a problem with our ice yet but if the snow goes completley then its only a matter of time for the ice. I would really like to see it cool off. We know that spring is a ways away and losing the ice isn't going to speed up the green grass. Bill

Wise thoughts my friend.
Do you usually head up between Xmas and New Year? I'm begining to figure (and like!) this stuff out and would sure enjoy catching you, Dan and the rest up there if you do.

Bill:
I'm on the ice in one form or another every weekend. Tournament season is just getting into full swing, and I think I'm about done ice fishing for the year, except for a vacation day here and there.

I remember those hockey days well. It was a great time, but after 22 years I can honestly say I don't miss it. Hope your tournaments are all in your favor. Bill
PS One more question Widetrack, Have you ever fished the 3 sisters Island area on the east side? Bill

Hey now, that one is all you! Haha! Don’t make another thread septic. 😉 Yup, the Looper Bug. I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it. 2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too. Such clear water. Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you. The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me. My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said. It hit basically right in front of my face. The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole. That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish. So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow. And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time. Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug. I remember the first time I was introduced to it. There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot. When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging. I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies. I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs. By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over! Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️ I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home. When I had more of the wander spirit. Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais. Then driving all the way home the same day. 🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once. It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun. We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em. We didn’t have any. My first 40+ hour day that I can remember. Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore. Fished all day, drove home Saturday night. Those crazy kids… Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed. The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds. They like to stick to what they know now.
