Oak island is closer to 40miles.
And if the bombers catch you running a truck on their trails, i'd think at the very least there would be words.
The whole things sounds fishy to me.

Thanks for the reply widetrack I started to argue a little in disbelief but thought I would ckeck with someone that knew what they were talking about.

Sounds like a story to me. Bomber drivers don't take to kindly to someone running down their trail. If they did come across a stuck vechile I am betting that they would just drive right by I have seen them do that many times. Remember resorts aren't in the towing services. They may help you out but I wouldn't count on it.
------------------
Grip it and Rip it
IFFWalleyes
I Fish For Walleyes
[email protected]

maybe I just need to tie a yellow ribbon on my antenna, since it sounds like it worked for him. hehehehe!

The bomber story is far out, but the no fish under 20" really blows that away wink.gif.
later,
toddb
[This message has been edited by toddb (edited 02-27-2004).]

Whould any one please help me out on this question.A coworker told me and several co workers that he just got back from (low) and drove out seven miles to oak island from wheelers point and do to the large amounts of slush drove on the bomadier trails. He also claims that they tied a yellow ribbon on the radio ant. and when they would get stuck the bomadiers would pull them out. I have only been to the big pond a couple of times and was under the understanding you should only cross these trails and not drive down the middle of them. And my second question is that by looking at the mn. map oak island looks alot farther then seven miles, because if he is telling the truth I am going because he say's they caught no fish under 20".

jbird, they probably drove out 7 blocks to pine island and caught nothin over 20" thier story is too much to believe I can`t think of 1 resort that would turn thier heads as you rumble down the bomby road and to pull you out so you could continue down the road naw I ain`t believing that b.s.............................

There is a big yellow sign just as you cross Pine Island coming from Wheeler Point on the Bomber Trail. It says very plain and simple. "NO TRUCKS ON BOMBER TRAILS, VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED". They definitley do not want any one running vehicles on these trails, and as Wide Track mentioned, the next sign crossing Pine says Oak Island 43 miles. Bill

Thanks for the replys, I showed your postings to some of the guys at work and they got a big kick out of it. Our only question is can you really be prosecuted and what would be the penalty for driving on the trails.

Posted

I would never drive on a bomber trail, well, at least not intentionally, but my question is....how the heck could they prosecute ANYONE? It's public waters right? They dont own the lake right? I think it's just a scare tactic to keep most people from driving on the trails, which one should not do.

Posted

I thought the very same thing as we passed that sign on Thursday. Could certainly be an interesting day in court. But as Tom said, "scare tactic", if it works so much the better. Bill

Im sure that's just a deterent. I do know bomber driver that uses that trail and he say's they just shoot on sight grin.gif. Stay off their trails they put alot of time in grooming and keeping them in shape to get customers to and from ASAP.
------------------
Will fish for work
Brian Rogers

Who would prosecute? The waterway is public & the Sheriff's Dept would have jusrisdiction on the waterway, HOWEVER, it is not a maintained roadway. The DNR would also have jurisdiction to a point on the waterway, HOWEVER the DNR would not take the liability of maintaining a roadway. These are just scare tactics. It may be is not kosher to drive on the "bombadier trails" but it is certainly not illegal, nor will anyone prosecute you for such.

Posted

that is a state snowmobile trail and just like the ones on land it is illegal to drive on it with a non-track vehicle

Posted

notrhwinds! that is absolutly correct it is a stste snowmobile trail to Oak. and the dnr can ticket for driving a 4x4 on this trail.thats only that particular trail though

Driving on the bomber trails isn't illegal by any means, but it's like a social morray around there-you just don't do it. It's inconsiderate. The signs are a good deterrent. No non-government entity has the authority to restrict the use of public waters (frozen or unfrozen). Driving wheeled vehicles really makes it rough going for the bombers. I accidentally made the mistake of doing this one time when I first got up here, and I won't ever do that again. It became an unpleasant situation.
TS

Correct. You can not be ticketed or anything else for driving on a bomber road! Would I do it? No! There is no law enforcing traffic on the bomber roads. Those resorts due work hard to keep them up so dont drive on them. There are good roads without having to worry about driving on the bomber roads.
Snowmobile trails are a whole different story. They are maintained by public $ and the laws are enforcable on them by various agency's.
[This message has been edited by Northlander (edited 03-03-2004).]

New to this, since bturck gave me the site this past weekend but have been intriqued by this conversation. I have guided on LOW for the past 12 years and thought you guys might like a different perspective on this issue. First of all thanks to those who say they won't drive on the trails,,,you are correct --countless hours and gallons of gas on spent on making and maintaining a smooth trail for the track rigs. A couple of the main reasons we adhore this action is 1)the fact that you already paid to use the plowed road system why not continue to use that facility? We all work together up here bomber trails and plowed road boys. Our main purpose is to keep all people on fish so they will continue to travel north for future trips. The bomber trails do not hold any special secret spots. 2) Let's put you in the driving seat...when you are on a track trail and encounter ruts made by a truck it is exactly like driving on a heavy slushed up highway. The tracks are never straight as they get thrown around themselves ,so as we travel down the trail after them, our skies grab those ruts and makes for a wrist breaking ride. As we also get stuck being thrown around in those ruts since the vechicle would rather follow those ruts than continue making a new trail--exactly like your car on the highway in slush and snow. As a side note we will stop and help people that are stuck...but it is not are first priority..many times i have told them that I will be back but only after I finish dropping off my customers..and when I return I do make a point of showing them where there are in comparsion to the plowed road that they paid for..although I try not to be belligerent we all occansionally have a bad day--------see you soon bturck at glenn's --tulibees are waiting for your dad-

[This message has been edited by charterboss (edited 03-03-2004).]

hey charterboss!? nicely put! which outfit do you work for?

It is a kind of unwritten rule to stay off the bomber trails. You won't get a ticket because no one owns the lake or these tracks/trails, it's just a courtesy thing. The designated sled trails are different and you could be ticketed on these, there is also one of these on the westside of the lake {Audobon?} as well as the Ballards trail on the eastside. Some operators are more possesive/territorial than others! I think alot of visiting anglers just don't know of this local 'ettiquet' {sp?}, they see some stakes and follow the path. Tire tracks on these paths would make it appear more inviting I suppose also. I've seen some operators get down right hostile, hostile to the point where they could probably be ticketed for angler harrassment if reported!
Stay off the bomber trails unless your on a snowmobile, or you have a Hummer with Mat Trax!
fiskyknut

Hey CharterBoss: Good to hear from you. I was planning my next trip on 3/25-3/27 but I just got off the phone with my son and it looks like we might try to get back on 3/18-3/20 as well. Thought we'd try to make it before the ice gets so sloppy I'll need to bring waders. Look forward to seeing you again. I'll let you know if the earlier date is going to work. Have to call Glenn and see if he's got a cabin for those dates. Bill

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
