We're coming up tonight--will we need Auger Extensions?
Thanks!
------------------
Chells

Was up there last weekend, there was 30" of ice 8 miles out from the south shore.
Lots of snow on the ice.

Why wouldn't you bring your extension? I'd like someone to explain this to me. When in doubt, bring it I say.

No kidding lowrox, god forbid you have to haul around that cumbersome auger extension, I know it is heavy and takes up all of that space in the fish house LOL....
Just bring it, there is 2+ feet of snow on the ice, unless you shovel it off before you drill the holes you will come close to it when you finally punch through.

If you shovel down, you won't need a extension this year.
Permanent house yes.
I think most people ask because if you need one, it's nice to have it on ahead of time, and if you don't it's nice not having to deal with extra length.
[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 02-26-2004).]

Thanks Guys--I guess I should have mentioned that I haven't purchased one yet and wasn't in the mood to run around today to find one before I leave.
This late in the season everyone is out-of-stock on this stuff or they've cleaned off the shelves getting them ready for open water season.
I do have a shovel and can easily clear the ice where I'll be drilling.
------------------
Chells

You can order a extension from whatever company you got your auger from and get it sent to you in 3-4 days. I did this with my Jiffy and it was there 2 days later.
If you ice fish a lot buy one and put it in the truck then you dont have to ask anyone if its needed. I like to put mine on this time of year so I dont have to shovel or bend over as much. At 6'6" its no big deal.

I can appreciate that - last year I bought some before I went up - needed 2 extensions close to shore. On the way up I saw the best extension - it was at the bait shop in Kelliher - it fit all makes of augers and was quickly adjustable the extension slid down into to the auger tube if you did not need it - wished I waited and bought that one.

Chells,
Sorry to jump on you about the extension, there's just so many people that ask about it on this sight. It's up to you if you want to buy one or not obviously. Shoveling down to the ice might work, problem is that in some areas the water level will end up being a inch or so above the ice. You'll then end up with a little flood on your hands. Bring good boots I guess?? My vote is to buy an extension, you're eventually going to need it one way or another.

Low, no offense taken--thanks for message, however.
I'm going to buy one anyway just because it does make the most sense.
Again, thanks for the input from you all!
------------------
Chells

Speaking of water on the ice, has it gottten sloppy up there at all with the warmer weather? Is there really two feet of standing snow everywhere on the lake?
I'm just a little concerned cause I plan on fishing for three days over the second weekend in March. If it gets any warmer, travel on the lake might get really tough.

Fished out of Long Point today, and it wasn't too bad. There was some slush under the snow. The main road back to shore is starting to get chewed up a bit. We had 30" of ice under our house. There is still plenty of snow, but it is starting to sink. We could get around better today with the suburban than we did a couple of weeks ago. The crust has melted and there's no hardpack left. Fishing was slow for us today. Didn't mark many. Still a beautiful day on the lake!

REPORT for 27-28th...
We had 6 in our party and without Sleds we would have been stuck close to shore where the fishing is really slow.
All of us went out towards Oak Island to a rock pile 20 miles out and we did pretty good.
We managed about 12 Jumbo Perch, and I mean Jumbo--12-13.5 inchers that had nice fat bodies. They would only take Shiner Minnows, no Fatheads. Pink Demons caught most of them with a Shiner Head.
I'd say we averaged about 4-5 fish per person a day, one nich meal and a few to take home.
For late season, I'd say not a bad trip and the warm weather made it very comfortable.
I caught 4 really nice 18-19 inch Walleyes and a bunch of 12-15 inchers, few Sauger- not sure why.
I lost a Walleye at the hole that went 30+ on Friday morning trying to nurse its head into the 10-inch hole! Their always bigger when you loose 'em grin.gif
Conditions are deteriorating quickly with the warm weather--the River is really getting bad and if you're not careful you can get your sled and tub stuck in close to 10 inches of water/slush.
You don't need an auger extention if you shovel down about a foot of top snow and drill--don't clean your spot down to the ice or you'll be wading in 2-3 inches of water while you fish.
------------------
Chells

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏
