I'm very new to this, I love reading the forum everyday. March 3rd my buddy and I are heading up to URL and Lake of the Woods, fishing portables. The questions I have for the group are: should we bring our sleds up to pull our portables, I'm allergic to shoveling, where would be the best place to go out of, How far out should we go and what's the cost for road usage.
Thank you for you input.
------------------
I would stop at adrians resort and talk to them. they plow the road across pine island, and it was going out about 12 miles.alot of places to pull off to the side.im going to red today and all the roads are in pretty good shape! good luck and watch out for the cops in that area at night!!!

It sounds like Long point is pretty well take'n care of....it usually costs $5 a vehicle to use their roads. Good luck!

Sniper1,
If you're coming up from Red Lake to fish LOW you might as well fish out of the Baudette area. Lake access is usually $5-6 and the roads are well maintained. Adrians is a good choice, a few other resorts plow roads as well. I'm sure that you'll be able to drive out, but if you plan on getting off of the beaten path then I'd take the sleds out. What the heck, the weather is nice and warm, why not go for a sled ride? Good luck to you and the crew. Let me know how Red Lake was if you could please. I'd like to get down there on of these days. Bring the sleds to get away from the crowds.

The Long Point area seems to be a more consistant bite in march.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
