With all this warm weather down around the Cities, the snow is really starting to settle down and getting around on the lakes is much easier.
I have a week long trip planned March 22-28. Is it any easier getting around out there recently compared to the posts I've read from a few weeks back?
Also, with all this snow cover on the lake, it sounds like there is much less ice depth than in past years. Do you think there might be an issue with ice conditions come the 3rd week of March.
A handful of us are planning on coming up with ATV's and portables. I'm getting a little worried that the 4-wheelers might be useless and/or the ice might be a little on the iffy side.
Any recent info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks-Tim

Ive been wondering the same thing also Hammer-Smites. I am heading up the last weekend of March. I have been thinking of contacting my buddy and see if he wants to go up earlier.
Ice is always on the iffy side especially in late winter.. it just depends on the melt . Watch the weather.
The thing to remember is lotw has a long history of ice fishing into April, that is why shaks don't (have) to be off till the end of March.
A lot of times that last week has a lot of water on the ice and it gets to the point sometimes of shuting down the access's but usually a day or week later the shores will freeze again and it will be good .
I measured 35" ice by Gull rock last weekend so there is a lesser amount but still a lot.
A good back up plan is bring your summer fishing stuff and fish the river if it's too warm.
That's my take on it anyways, Good Luck !
Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏
