Fished Winni 12-28 to 12-31 with 5 buddys. heres my reports day by day.

12-28 Lake was full of water. The fishing was still ok. We all managed to catch nice perch and some keeper eyes. No real jumbos to speak of. used Buckshot Rattle spoons with whole fatheads and just the heads. Plus are normal jig and minnow combo. All caught fish. Buddy caught 29 inch pike on 2 pound test also. We fished in 20 feet of water.

12-29 lake froze over but there where bad slush spots. Fished in our same areas and the fishing was slow. Picked up and moved out of Denny's Resort. Caught nice perch and eyes out by the stumps area. Anywhere from 15 feet to 27 feet of water. We all got limits of perch and a few eyes. Had nice perch fry that night.

12-30 Went back out of Denny's. We did ok by the stumps. I decided to rome all over that day. Found some perch on a nice sand flat in 35 feet of water by a 24 foot reef. Caught a nice limit of jumbos and 2 keeper eyes released a 17 incher and 26 incher, and lost a real big eye at the hole. Also caught a big eelpout. Ice was in nice shape, no slush froze solid and 16 plus every place I drove.
Had a nice perch and eye dinner that nice to.

12-31 fished Cutfoot for panzies that morning. Fish where real finiky. Managed to catch 10 nice slabs. ice was good we drove out. Used euros, waxies and fat boys and pounders.

12-31 Went out of the Birches federal access at 10a.m. I went roaming all over again. Found some real big jumbos over 35 feet in the mud. which I knew the perch would be all along just never made it out that far. All of us caught a limit of really nice jumbos. No eyes but a few where down there saw them on the cameras. Got to perch that will go on the wall. 12 incher with a huge belly and humped shoulders and a 13.5 incher another pig. Buck Shot rattle Spoons and fatheads again. Also used Angel Eyes and perch colored jiggin raps. The fish where so aggressive they hit the raps with no minnow head. Our average size that day was 11 inches on all our perch.

Was another great trip. Where going back next week. Like i say ice was in good shape and there was about 4 or 5 inches of snow on lake.

Good Fishin,

Trapper

Hey Protrapper. Glad to hear you did well. Can you tell me if the ice broke up real bad in front of the Birches landing by High Banks like it did in front of Nodaks. I heard it was almost impossible to get out from there because the ice was so rough. Thanks.

There where some really rough areas that way nad also in front of Denny's. There is also the heave from Tamarak point to Bowens flats that is there every year. I drove along it and there is no way around it that is safe. Maybe with some cold weather we may be able to jump it! If your crazy enough! Ice is never safe so be carefull. I know Iwas a little nervous at times driving all over by myself.

Good Fishin,

Trapper

trapper, 4 days (3 posted) of catching your limit? You must eat a lot of fish or you have over your possession limit!

Here we go again!! If you read his post again it says they ate fish. You can't even give a report here without someone getting on thier horse to point fingers. Possesion limits for perch are 2 days!!! It wouldn't be hard to eat another limit. If you give anyone the benefit of the doubt give it to the prostaff of this site.

BDR I couldnt agree more pro trapper gives a great in depth report and he has to get picked at.I wish eveybody could just worry about themselves and not be so worried about what everybodyelse may or may not be doing. Pro trapper we almost went out of birches on the 28th sat there and looked at it awhile and chickend out it looked really bad there sun, but after driving a fair amount other places we proably would have been alright. thanks for the report.

I also went our of birches wed am and fished all the way over by the high banks houses. Nothing moving on the bar, and nothing moving deep, except a huge pout and a 5 lb pike. The day before we got some perch on Bowen's in the morning and later a couple eyes and nice perch on Horseshoe out of Nodak's in 37 feet at about 2-3 pm. All in all slower than we'd hoped. Birches ice is fine. Fastest action was on Angel Eyes.

Went out of bowens on the 1rst pounded the perch 10 to 12 inchers. started in 12 ft of water caught a couple but the water was really cloudy so moved into 8-9ft no more than got setup and all heck broke loose dropped my 1rst minnow down and never got to the second rod. caught my 20 in about 1/2 hour then went for a lil c&r and wow had so much fun i had to go to the next guy and give him all my minnows so id go home and that still didnt work. lol i had a lil glow white shrimpo on my noodle so figured heck id try it just to see and same results theyed hit it before it ever hit the bottom on the initial drop it was crazy. Lars you shoulda came it was a blast.also talked to an old timer out there that headed somewhere towards the rock pile and he said the ice is pressure cracked into triangles not a good mixture with trucks so watch out.
good fishin all

What about ice ridges on Winnie, are they causing problems getting around? What is the best way to get around/across them?

Thanks.

The big one is from Tamarak Point to Bowens Flats area. You cant miss it. The only way around it is out Birches or High Banks. It's there every year.

Does that ridge tend to run more toward the gap then to the flats? I was fishing off the flats a week or so back and didn't see the ridge but maybe was in too close to the flats to see it. Is it more southwest of where all the fish houses are?

More towards The Gap. The spear houses stop almost right next to it. You cant miss it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
