I hear alot that July is great for muskies over in the Sabaskong Bay area. What about August and later into the fall? Is the algae bloom a big problem? If I can't get up there in July, what would be the better time to go muskie hunting, August, Sept., or October? What tactics and locations would be best?
Thanks
Jeff

My opinion on August is that it gets a little slower on Musky in the Sabaskong area. We usually head west to the North side of Big Island that time of year.
As for other months I think October is the prime time for Musky. Pulling cranks through every channel with current and around every rock pile between Morson and Nestor Falls usually produces. In the past we have gone late in October but the weather by that times becomes very unpredictable.
Just my two cents.
Good luck.

If you ask me any one who trolls for the muskey.....IS NOT a Fisherman!!
All you are doing is going for a boat ride...you don't get the excitement of the of strike or the follow.......THE HUNT!!!
This is what muskey fishing is all about.
Muskey fishing is a sport!!

First off you should learn to spell Musky, or Muskie.
Second, I troll for Musky, as well as cast. I'll guarantee you one thing, if you are trolling right, there is a heck of a lot more to it then going for a boat ride. Matter of fact doing it right takes more precise boat control then any sort of fishing I can think of.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
