Jim,
If your talking about Buffalo Bay, the snow is quite deep up there. We were there a couple weeks ago for 3 days, 1 truck out on ' the bar ' on Friday, the truck was still there Sat. stuck in a drift. On Sat. 6 trucks came out from Birch, the leader had chains on his and broke trail. Sunday there was no trucks out there, it blew pretty good late Sat. and into Sunday.
I counted about 21 houses out there and maybe 5 had people in them, I'm not sure if it was the snow that kept them away or just the sloooow fishing. Sounds like the fish are sitting very tight this year, if you are more than a few yards away you won't catch anything. Quite a few nice perch, the Pike are hitting but not very aggressivly.
If your thinking about going up, bring the sled, its the only way to go........
Mike

------------------
Frozen Bait

The only major breaker is just a little ways off shore when you first come off of Birch but it looks like it might be in the way out in front of Reed, there it is a little further off shore, maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 mile out or so. I took a ride on the sled one day just to see what things looked like. Other than that no real active breakers out there and the piles of ice that were there are under snow now. If does melt and you come off of the Marina, I know earlier in the season it was a little messy around there, about a 1/2 mile of rough ice where we went but like I say, most of that is under snow now.
Mike

------------------
Frozen Bait

Fisky,
Definitely want to see those flags!!!!
Hoping to surpass my jack I caught last MArch!!
MN Mike,
Thanks, sounds typical for the Bay. I hope we get some melt off real soon. Last year it was a major slush fest in front of the marina!
Jim W

I would think if a person would give the Bay a try for some jacks, a person could get them to bite. We fished Muskeg Bay this weekend and managed to get a 38 inch, 38.5 inch, and a 39.5 inch with a few smaller ones thrown in there. Depth ranges were from 6 feet to 16 feet. March is a great time to get them but there are some to be caught now.

Jim,
Just got back from Buffalo. LOTS of snow, quite a few areas of slush, had to lift the houses again. The snow is pretty nice and smooth, you can zip out to the house at 40 mph or so on sleds, makes it nice for some runnin' and gunnin' if you have portables.
Fishing was good Saturday for just about everything, Sunday was slower.
The marina is open now too.
Mike

Thanks Mike!
Did you run into any Jumbo perch?
Thanks again!!!
Jim W

Posted

Yes, I did get into a few, probably would have had some more if I was set up for them. Had a good bite most of the afternoon on Sat. with the best time from 4 til dark. When I started using minnows I had cut in half I started catching more fish. I think there are a couple places out there that are giving up some good numbers of jumbos, didn't measure the ones I caught but when they are that big it just doesn't matter.
When are you going up?
Mike
Posted

Next Wednesday.
We've been going up there for quite some time and have several spots that always produce, but never a real solid jumbo bite.
Were you getting them "deep"(er)?
Feel free to e-mail me if you have time to share locations.
Jim W
I was sitting in about 20' of water when I was catching them off the end of the bar. Its kind of funny but last year when the big breaker was out there everybody was about 150 yards to the west and now nobody even tries it over there.
Mike

Sort of expected that! Thanks!
YEs it was kind of weird seeing everyone cross the breaker.
I guess the "shanty town" mentality is in place eh?
Thanks agian for the info!!
Jim W

Jim
Travel on the bay by truck was tried by 2 of our group, one with a camper and chains, who made it to the snag hole and that was about it. the other followed and was shoveling a couple times to keep moving.
there were a couple 4 wheelers that "seemed" to be doing OK on sat. but if the weather got warm, and the crust dissapeared, good luck with them! snowmobile may still be the best bet.
we had 24 tipups to watch and only about a doz fish caught, bigest was 40-5/8", one monster lost after showing its head. still, I had a blast and I will be back for more!
Good luck to ya!

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏

Hey now, that one is all you! Haha! Don’t make another thread septic. 😉 Yup, the Looper Bug. I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it. 2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too. Such clear water. Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you. The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me. My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said. It hit basically right in front of my face. The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole. That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish. So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow. And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time. Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂 awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug. I remember the first time I was introduced to it. There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot. When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging. I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies. I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs. By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over! Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️ I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home. When I had more of the wander spirit. Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais. Then driving all the way home the same day. 🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!
