I am bringing my 7 yr old daughter up next weekend for some fishing, pool time and father/daughter bonding time. We have a yearly fishing day together but never have had great success. I think she is old enough now to go to the big lake with dad so here we come.
We are thinking of either going out of Morris Pt. or Zippel. We are planning on fishing out of my portable. We do have a Yukon but maybe you guys think there is to much snow for us to move around.
I would really like her to catch a bunch of saugers/walleyes and have as good an experience as possible for her 1st time.
I value your opinions greatly and would really appreciate it if you could give us your thoughts on where are best chances are going to be.
THANK YOU!!!

Hey there,
If at all possible I'd recommend you wait until mid march or so. Feb is sort of a funk for fishing. I was out today and managed to scratch my limit of eyes, but it was plain tough work. Had to move several times and it took all day to get them.
If I were forced to fish from a vehicle I would probably try long point, or babblers road around Arnesons reef, or gull rock.
Come with reasonable expectations this time of year, as scratching out a nice meal is doing pretty good right about now.
That said, spending time with your kids without TV's, phones, etc... etc... is time pretty darn well spent. Hope you have great time.

Duckbuster,
You wont have any trouble getting around
with your Yukon, you will need to stay on
the roads though.
Morris Point has been doing a good job all
winter keeping things in good shape but I
havent heard how fishing has been lately.
Zipple has more area to fish and a great
system of roads. Either place gives you
decent chance at some fish. Like Widetrack
said, you arent comming up at peak time.
I had some friends at Zipple last weekend
and they did good.
Both resorts will give you all the info they
have about where to fish each day.
If fishing is not good, the pool time will
be a blast.

Good Luck
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
