RED RIVER of the NORTH
Central Region
02/18/2003

The fishing has recently shown a marked upturn on the central region of the Red River. Walleye action has increased a little each week as the days grow slowly longer.

Water clarity remains very good, best I remember seeing in the winter. This exceptional clarity has made for some interesting underwater viewing with my Aqua-Vu SV system, extremely interesting.

The Aqua-Vu SV system is an exceptional tool to learn structure and fish habits, critical in refining your presentations.

Best action for walleye has been in the early AM pre-dawn hours, and again from 3-7 PM. Current breaks remain the key, shallow breaks have been better then deep pools, by far.

Gold or Gold Orange flash lures have been my personal best producers. Zip lures, Chubby Darters, Ivan's Slammers, Angel Eye minnows, and Lindy flyer's jigs have been consistent when tipped with a minnow head, or whole minnow.

I anticipate the bite to continue to improve into early spring. Then the ice becomes again too unsafe to travel upon, and we must wait for the thaw. Caution is always wise on river, as it begins to warm increasingly so.

Be safe, and don't give up on the ice fishing season just yet folks. More good things to come, I am confidant of that.

Been awhile since I posted, busy summer but finally got the kayak back out on the Mississippi to chase after them fall smallies. The bite was really good and managed a new personal best at 21"! Bait of choice is my wacky worm, they never can resist! I'll be chasing these till ice is on the lakes. Best fishing is right around the corner, goodluck everyone!    Video:  https://youtu.be/PJOZITB0ol0

Was up last weekend to Kab, and fishing is very good right now. We caught a lot of walleyes (lots of smalls) on jig & minnow, and got in to a lot of Crappies as well. Have fun! The bite is on.
