I will be heading up to international falls for the weekend and bringing my Grandpa. We'd like to head over to LOW one day. I don't know much about the angle, getting there, or fishing it. The goal is to get gramps on a lot of fish. From what I hear the perch fishing can be good, with saugers and walleyes mixed in. Last year we went out of adrians road.
Can anybody offer any advice to make it doable. I will be driving a 4wd truck, no sled or 4-wheeler. Will we need an auger extension?
Thanks

Fryer,

The good news is that you will not need an extension. The bad news is that there is only snowmobile access or resort access to the Angle.

Frank Walsh

Frank,
How are things up North? Has the fishing been anything to speak of?
Also is there a ton of snow up there? I shoveled my roof off at buffalo this weekend, and there was a bunch there, made me think I better get to the Angle and get if off my shack up there too..
Daver.

Hi Dave,

Overall fishing has been pretty good, but not at last season's feverous pace. Two things also different this year is we are not seeing the 50 million dinks, nor the number of northerns we have been seeing over the last two years. We had a great week of fishing including a 28 1/2" & a 29", but she kind of went south a bit with the warming trend that hit Sunday. Started recovering a bit yesterday afternoon, but I also made some structure changes that I think helped.
Snow is making life miserable. Travel is tough, and long distance fish house moving is all but impossible. Only getting 2-3 days out out of a spot before flooding forces me out. Even if it's catching fish. So you just might want to shovel off your place up here.
How many more days til June 19th????

Frank Walsh

Frank,
Thanks for the update. I bet running the business right now is nothing but hard work.
Sounds like I have a excuse to head up to the Angle for a bit anyway!
Take care, the days are getting longer.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
