Should we bring the snowmobile this weekend or will guy do just as well pulling off the road in a truck. Planning on using Babblers road or Long Point...not sure yet. Thanks for the help. <P>Is is worth it to head to 12-mile? I haven't heard much about this reef in a while. If we have the sleds, should we plan on heading out much further?

If you have sleds...and want to get away from everyone...bring'em! No question. Have fun and good luck!!

I talked to Richard Babbler about a half hour ago....They got a little more snow up there overnight...lots of wind...even as we speak. The road that had gone to 16 is blown shut and will remain shut...Richard said he was going to keep plowing to gull and arneson's, that's it. The trails of Babblers road to the east are blown in and will take some serious, well equiped, chained up, adventured to get going again. BRING THE SLEDS!!

Thanks for the heads-up. Hopefully this wind shuts down before tomorrow morning. Good luck to all.

I feel the only way to fish LOW is on a snowmobile. I wouldnt even think of going without one. It is nice to go out to knight and bridges area. The pressure out there is minumal. Its not uncomon to be the only one out there. ALL BY YOURSELF!!! Thats fishing. It might be a little more work but its worth it.

Just got back from LOW. Fished out of Babblers Friday and Long Point Saturday. As said Babblers is only open out to Gull Rock and Arneson's. Long Point's road is in real good shape. Didn't have much luck Friday, just two pout and one walleye, but we didn't get set up til 1:00. Saturday out of Long Point we got 14 'eyes and 2 sauger. Not a single fish over 14". Fishing was a tad dissappointing but it was a fun trip anyway!

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.

Grandpa added: then you marry one, then you die, then she has all your money. 😉

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings.  Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die"  so cheery. 😏
