Just wondering why the fish seem to stop biting at night in the winter at LOW along the south shore? Thanks for any replies.

As far as fishing at night, i have tried it in years past and only caught eel pout. However with all this snow lately i can't see how any light gets through the ice. And also combined with the poor water clarity how do the fish know when it is light out. They don't have a watch down there that tells them when the sun comes up or goes down. So even though i have never had luck fishing at night, i have only tried it on years when there was hardly any snow on the ice. So maybe with all this snow things will change? I doubt it though. Also in year past when there was a lot of snow, does the day bite slow down, or doesn't it make any difference at all?

The Low never Produces at night. But even with 30 in of snow on the lake it still penetrates. Look at it this way. A beam of sun reflexs of of a snow flake which reflexs to another and another etc. etc. etc. until it reaches the the ice and penetrates into the water. I know deep thinks but it passes the time WHEN IM NOT ON THE LOW!!!! grin.gif

lowpike, you stated that the water clarity is not good so does that mean I should not bother with a aqua cam when I am coming up their for the 20 & 21st of Feb.
I am a first timer also so I do not now what to expect. Will be staying out of a Gibbins sleeper.
bottomfinder

You have to think of the fishery in a global sence. The fish on Lake of the Woods through both genitics and experance are conditioned to a daytime bite. The dark water allows for the proper conditions for the walleye and saugar to feed most efficiently durring the day. The opposite is true on lakes with very clear water. They primarily have just a night bite or the only day bite happens durring dark skys with wind. That is when the preditors have an advantage over their prey. The walleyes don't have to feed at night to be successful. The best conitions accually occur durring the day. Even with snow on the ice some light gets through. And the fish are conditiond to be 9 - 5 feeders. Thats what is great about LOW. You don't need to get up at dawn and you don't need to fish half the night. Unlike lakes like Mille Lacs where there are multiple bites around the clock. That's why I like the spring night ban so you can get some rest without feeling like you are missing something and nobody else can be out there either.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
