I know there was a lot of talk here about marine radios but what is the vote for the best all around portable unit?? How far are they good for on a Bad day ??

My experience with marine radios is that I found just the hendheld units are fairly decent. I seen them get out to 8 miles as the crow flies up on the lake in the Morson area. And thats wtih a few island in the way too. They werent nothing fancy either just the Hummminbird Handheld is we use. Hope this helps! Brian

Buckets: Most of the Hand Helds on the market are just about the same. Look them over and select the brand that has the features appealing to you. A programed scan is nice, so you can monitor the selected channels in the area you most often fish. Some have a remote mic and a adapter for an external antenna for more range. Another nice feature is a 12vdc plug in for using the power from the boat, or in the winter the truck. By getting these, you can almost make it a regular install for prolonged use. One thing to check is the output power. Most are 5 watts, but some only run 3 watts when not pluged into a larger source of power. A rule of thumb is, one mile per watt of power out. Lithium battery is better than a Nicad, if you can find one that has it. Physical size and a belt clip are convenient. I like the Icom or Uniden, check out the catalogs and go for one....Kaz

Buckets: Yup, down in Florida til May, or there about's. It's different fishing down here. Saltwater's a blast, bigger fish, and you never know what's in the other end of the line. We fish both coasts, a buddy of mine has a boat over in the Naples area. I'm on the east coast, south of Fort Lauderdale. Snapper is very good, but there's nothing like a good WALLEYE for dinner. Was over at a place called Tuna's the other night in North Miami, and the Bartender was from Keilher MN. We were chatting about the cold and this year, all of the snow. Dinner was good and the Chivas was good too!!! Look around for a radio and I'm sure you'll find the one you want... See you on LOTW in the spring.....Kaz

I bought a pair of Midlands a few weeks back they worked very well up there. Lots of features, price less than Motorola plus they had a three year warranty. I'm happy with them. They advertise 5 miles on land and 7 on water. Bill

Central America.   Focus.   We almost went for a local overnight crappie run but the daughter’s septic froze so I got to work the brown trout pond through a 4 inch hole.   It was opener today afterall. 😉

Ok, how did we get from crappies and freezing temps to pond slime eaters in south America?  Focus!  🙄

The locals there shoot ducks but don't hunt them. If they see a bunch on a pond they'll sneak up and water swat them but it's strictly for food not sport. My buddy runs an outfitter so him and I will hunt a few days and scout then I'll help him with a group whose coming mid week. He's from there. Hoping he can come to Canada next year with me. He's never seen or shot a goose

Awesome kind of trip! I figured there would be a local benefit if you couldn’t bring them back (not saying you can’t).  Having a connection down there is pretty cool!   We donated a good share of meat to the village in Kotzebue, AK instead of shipping it all back.  Pretty pricey and they really appreciated it.  Win/win.

I don't bring them back, eat a lot then clean them for the village. Some like them plucked and some like the breasts cut out. It's really remote where I go and the locals live off the land. I know they want me to go get some doves for them too. My buddy is a local so we'll probably go get a deer as well for some venison for some of the elders in the community
