Just got back from Lake of the Woods. I can't wait to go back soon! Our group of seven caught our limit and ate fish every day. My son caught a five and four pounder along with some really big perch. I hope when I'm an old man these memories of these trips to LOTW will still be with me and my buddies. We stayed in sleepers but did stay the first night before our trip at the AmericInn in Baudette which provided us great service and we ate at Rosalie's which has the best dinners in all of Minnesota!
Jig-em

Jig-em, if you like Lake of The Woods in the winter, you'll love it in the summer! Like Bturk said "it'll grow on you!"

I've been up quite a bit and also in the summer, however, it's a place that I see new stuff each time. I was fishing near Zippel Bay.

Jig-em,
How old is your son. I'm thinking about bringing my 9 year old up next year.

Ed,
He's 14 and really into fishing. He came up last year also. Was a little concerned that maybe the slow times might be a little much, but he really enjoys it, so, I guess we have another permanent party in the group.

Texas Ed -
By all means take your son! LOW is about the best place in the world to take a kid. I have been bringing mine for several years and they love it. Sleepers are great for kids because they have bunks to lay and play on when the fishing is slow. My girls have a tendency to goof off and read, play games ect. when the fishing is slow (no one has ever complained of being bored). That is when my 9 year old son jigs everyone's lines and scabs fish off of them grin.gif. Then they argue over who gets the credit for the fish. Of course you know who's side dad is on!
Jake has been fishing up there since he was 5 and he caught an 8 1/2 pounder last year. He does not have time for games - its jig, jig, jig.................

My son is now six he has been going with us for three years now. If your son likes to fish he will love it. One thing I do is bring the warm clothes up and go out and play around in the snow for a hour or two each day it breaks up the day and i must admit that the gameboy does go along. My son loves the eelpout fishing we do in the evenings. Go luck.
Sifty
Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
