Will be heading to the Sportsmans Lodge early Friday morning (3hr drive from my location). After checking in, my wife and I will be venturing out on the big lake. This will be her first fishing experience at LOW. Is there someone that could point me in the right direction, just so she has a chance to pull one or two eaters out of the lake!!!!? I'll be driving 1/2 ton 4x4 chevy, with the portable in back. And by reading some of the recent post, I am thinking of throwing the snowblower in as well or at least a shovel!!! One more inquiry, do I need to bring an extension for the ice-auger?

Highlander: From the posts that have appeared the past few days it looks like the deeper water is where the most consistent bite is right now. You will most likely want to follow Adrians road from Wheelers Point if you are doing your own driving. The going was getting tough off road a week ago when I was there, and they have been dumped on twice since then. We were in Riverbend houses and track vehicles was the mode of transportation as they do not plow a road to their houses. We saw very limited vehicle traffic in our area. Hope your wife has a good time. I had mine with me and she really had a good time. She wants to know when we're headed back. Good luck, hang on and have safe trip. Bill

Highlander, I agree with bturck to head out Adrian's road. The people at Sportsman's will direct you on the best place to go. You could always swing into Adrian's and ask them, too. Last week we were about 7 miles past the island. Bring a shovel along just in case and when you get to your destination, pull off where somebody else has been or in an area that you won't get stuck in. If you put the time in, your wife WILL catch fish. Don't bring the extension. There was 2 feet of ice last week. Even though it's extremely cold, the snow insulation will keep the ice from building enough to need an extention.

i disagree with the deeper water recommendation. I went up with the family the 18th through 22 and the first 2 days they had us in about 37 feet and we did good on the pout and the whitefish and a few saugers but nothing to brag about. The 3rd day i asked if they could put us in shallower water and we ended up in 26 feet. Fishing was fabulous. We ended up with our limits between four of us and i got a 28 inch pig weighing in at 10 pounds which is at the taxidermist. Billy Minke is his name and he does a great job. Ive had him do several fish and the look great.

Personally i would still consider 27' of water as deep. I equate shallow to less than 20'. Just my $1's worth. Bill

Thanks for the info everyone!! How far do I drive once I am on the ice, to be in the desired area? And what do you suggest I put down the ice-hole? Is it worth getting my bait at home or paying out the nose for bait there? Some of the posts that I have read suggested to buy the bait there. I realize that locals will say spend the money hear (which I know is good for a community), but does it make a difference?<P>Thanks Agian Everyone!!!

the bait is cheap up there too.

Highlander: As you come out of Baudette toward Wheelers Point on 172 you will see Log Cabin Bait on your right side just prior to the Adrians Resort Sign. A scoop of shiners is 3.50 personally i don't consider that over priced. Not sure on the fatheads as the resort I stay at provides those for us. If you are then intending to use Adrians Road from Wheelers Point stop at the resort (to pay the road fee, $5.00) and ask them how far out you would need to follow their road to get to your desired depth of water. They should also be helpful in indicating to you the depth at which there houses are and what depth has been producing for their clients. Hope this helps you out. By the way where are you travelling from to get to LOW? Just curious. Have a great time and give us a report when you get back home. Bill

Highlander: Forgot to touch on the other part of your question; what to put down the hole. I would suggest going back several posts and see the reports that the folks have entered it should give you some good info. Gold is always a good choice, however pink/white jigs, plain gold and white glow hooks will also produce. Be fexible and play around especially since you will have four lines down. Bill

I am traveling from the city of Park Rapids, leaving in the morning and hopefully be fishing by 1200hrs - 1300hrs. staying over-night and leaving the area at around 1300hrs - 1400hrs. Going to hit URL for the evening crappie bite and then homeward bound. Got to rest up for the Superbowl party!! As for fishing four holes, I think I will stick with the two holes in my Twin Ranger. I really don't feel like fighting with tip-ups out in the wind!!!

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
