I was just curious as to what depth people have been starting at early in the morning people have told me so many different things (i.e. 15ft, 18ft, 21ft) now I don't even know which way to turn. Any help at all would be great.

Just my feeling on this, because of the size and expanse of this lake nothing is written in stone. This time of year I have been going right out to 30-31 and catching fish early. Not every fish in any body of water moves deep, so shallow bites will always be there, as well as the bite in the basins. Good luck, and hang on. Bill

Eyespy,<P>Your question is a difficult one, it really all depends on the spot that you're fishing. For example, I fished off of Long Point a few weeks back and set up in 25' for the morning bite and moved out to 32' for the afternoon. Now....if I were fishing the south tip of Buffalo I might start out in 18' and then move out to 26'. It really all depends on the type of structure you're fishing and how quickly it drops off. If you were fishing a reef for example you might start right on the top and then move off of the edge out in the mud for the afternoon bite. This seems to work well because when you're ready to move back on top of the reef for the evening bite, you can just use your same hole. This eliminates the chance of you spooking fish off of the reef if you were to drill holes. I hope some of this helps, good luck out on the hard water.

We planned to start on the reefs I just wanted to know if I should start on the very top or maybe down a ways off the middle in a little deeper water, probably will start off on thrus. on 12 mile, or maybe pine, if we can. So how deep is the snow out there anyways. not sure what to bring for transportation, three groups of two fishing portables to stay as mobile as possible.

Eyespy: My prior post regarding your question was relative to the area that I fish which is out from Pine Island. No reefs in the immediate area so thats why I indicated I would head deep. If I were in an area that had reefs I would start near the top early and work deep and reverse the procedure later in the day unless the bite was telling me something different. As mentioned above, this can be a tough question with a different answer every day. Good luck, and hang on. Bill

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
