anyone have any thoughts about the amount of snow on the ice, will it make enough ice to stand the warmer temps in late march? if not i may see if we can move our reservations up a few weeks?

I wouldn't worry, lotw is known for icefishing into April. Fishhouse's have till the end of March to be off. Atv's are a good bet by then though.

Usually by then the snow will have melted. The bad part about that is that that means the ice has started to fall apart. Last year we were up there and there was 4-5 feet of ice but it was getting pretty rotten but it was glare ice on top all the snow was gone. But ATV should work that time of the year I hope so because that is what I am planning to bring if I can't get out with the truck.
------------------
Grip it and Rip it
IFFWalleyes
I Fish For Walleyes
[email protected]

There should be ice until at least mid-April. I was worried two weeks from opener last year if I would be able to get my boat out, so I think you will be fine. I would recommend a snowcat over a wheeler because that's the time of the year when the cracks are normally really active and it can get pretty hairy crossing cracks on a wheeler.

There was an article in the Grand Forks paper back in the mid-1990's on some guys that went ice fishing in May on opening day.
They paddled canoes or jon boats out to the edge of the ice pack, and drug them up on to the ice and proceeded to catch fish.
I saved the clipping, but it is buried somewhere.

perchpounder: I don't believe the ice depth will be a problem 3rd week of March. The big concern could be early high temps that turn the snow into a swimming pool. We were up last year the last week and had great luck, have another trip booked for late March and hope the weather stays a little bit cooler than last year. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Good luck, and hang on. Bill
