My wife and I fished out of one of Bayview Lodge's fishhouses. The weather we had made it quite interesting to say the least. We tried to get on the lake at 7 am, but couldn't see 5 feet in front of us because of the wind and blowing snow. We headed back to the resort and managed to get out around noon. We were 8 miles out and in 32 feet of water. We caught 20-25 saugers w/ a couple 'eyes mixed in, and also 4 humongous perch. We ended up keeping 7 saugers, 3 'eyes, and the 4 perch. Action was consistent except for 3-4pm (dead sea) and then picked up again. We caught fish on a little bit of everything, our best bait was a crappie sized glow red frostee jig. If you're thinking about using a portable up there, you'll have a tough time pulling off any of the roads, even w/ 4WD. The resort owner had to plow out the trail to our house and when he came to pick us up the snow had already drifted in to knee high to waist deep!<P>bmc

Fished out of Morris Point resort 1/20-1/22 about 4 miles out in 30 feet of water. Caught about 150 eyes/auger mix in 3 days. I would say it was a 3 sauger to 1 eye mix. Nothing big, but a consistant bite all day. Stayed in our own house and rode out the storm on wed and caught fish all day long. 1 28" Pike on 4# test, wow was that fun!!! Would recomend Morris Point, very nice people!!!!!

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
