Hey guys,<BR>I have a buddy that is going crappie fishing somewhere down by brainerd this weekend. He doesnt fish much and asked me what to use to catch the slabs. First I told him to take my vexilar with, then probably some small minnows....what kind of hook set up should he consider? I've never had the oppurtunity to fish crappie....kinda stuck on 14" walleyes for now!! grin.gif Anyway, any help would be great.

Boeneer'<P>You're "buddy" huh.. I didn't know you were goin to brainerd this weekend. I like to fish them big slabs with big sucker minnows set up with a quickstrike rig. GOOD LUCK!!

Boenner: Check out the Brainerd Forum. There are some awfully good crappie lakes in the Brainerd area. I'm about an hour south of that city. If you pose any questions ask for help from early007, Jason Erlandson. He owns Daves Sportland and Tackle in Nisswa which is just north of Brainerd in prime crappie county. You were correct on the Vex and small minnows. Small glow jigs will work great set up on a slip bobber rig. These fish do a lot of suspending in deeper water and the Vex will certainly be a most useful tool. If he stops at Daves Sport and Tackle Jason will do everything he can to steer him in the right direction. Hope this helps somewhat. Bill

Here is some of the best information I can provide when fishing for crappies. First, I like to use a deadstick with a crappie minnow and small (#8 or #10) plain hook about 2 ft. off the bottom with the minnow tail hooked. Second, I like to jig for crappies using the following setup - ultralite jig pole, neon lite moon jig (smaller is better, favorite colors for me are green glow and red glow), 1 crappie nibble and 1 waxie or wiggler on the jig (nibble on first). Keep the bait fresh and adjust the deadstick setup based on the depth the crappies are being caught at. This setup has produced a lot of nice slabs through the ice this year for me.

Central America.   Focus.   We almost went for a local overnight crappie run but the daughter’s septic froze so I got to work the brown trout pond through a 4 inch hole.   It was opener today afterall. 😉

Ok, how did we get from crappies and freezing temps to pond slime eaters in south America?  Focus!  🙄

The locals there shoot ducks but don't hunt them. If they see a bunch on a pond they'll sneak up and water swat them but it's strictly for food not sport. My buddy runs an outfitter so him and I will hunt a few days and scout then I'll help him with a group whose coming mid week. He's from there. Hoping he can come to Canada next year with me. He's never seen or shot a goose

Awesome kind of trip! I figured there would be a local benefit if you couldn’t bring them back (not saying you can’t).  Having a connection down there is pretty cool!   We donated a good share of meat to the village in Kotzebue, AK instead of shipping it all back.  Pretty pricey and they really appreciated it.  Win/win.

I don't bring them back, eat a lot then clean them for the village. Some like them plucked and some like the breasts cut out. It's really remote where I go and the locals live off the land. I know they want me to go get some doves for them too. My buddy is a local so we'll probably go get a deer as well for some venison for some of the elders in the community
