This is our first trip to Lake of the Woods and we are pretty keyed up about it. we are doing a sleeper and are wondering if there are any tips you can give. should we bring our portables, auger do the fish bite at night as well as day? As you can see I have many questions any advise will help. Thank you and Good Fishing

The fish usually do not bite at night on LOW. That's Miller time..............
If you want to spread out a little I am sure the boys would drill some holes outside for you if you ask them. They do their best to take care of you!
I usually do not bring my portable when staying in the sleepers. I usually get enough action to keep me busy and I guess I am a little lazy when I go that route. It is just to d*mn comfortable for me to start running around grin.gif.
If you do a search on this forum listing Gibbin's I am sure you will find lots of info on the subject.
Good luck and please give us a report when you get back.

I would recomend bringing portables and an auger. If they dont happen to be biting that good where the house is you are going to be real sorry you didnt bring them. And as far as biting at night you may catch some pout but that is about it but they can be fun and there are some big ones.Pretty tasty to.State record pout come out of there.Your best fishing is from sunup to sundown.
[This message has been edited by rmh2o (edited 01-22-2004).]

Datman: Bring the deck of cards and lots of quarters. A hot poker game can sure help pass some time, might even pay for your part of the trip. LOL Bill

No need to bring cards. The houses already have them grin.gif.

Leave the auger at home. They should come out and check on you a few times throughout each day. If you holes are freezing up, just ask them to re-drill them. I've stayed in sleepers a few times and run my FL-8 during daylight hours for 2 1/2 days and it's never died on me. I turn it on occasionally at night to see if any suspended fish are roaming around and to see if I can snag a pout sitting off the bottom. But if you're battery doesn't hold a charge that long, I'd bring along an extra battery or just bring your charger and ask them to bring it in at night and plug it in for you. I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem charging it up overnight for ya. Afterall, their goal is for you to be happy and catch a lot of fish, so having a fully charged Vex. helps a lot.
Good Luck, I'll be in one of Ballard's sleepers this weekend. It's gonna be a cold one!

MG-Fishin
you think that the cold will have a bad effect on the fishing?

Datman,
Remember to leave a line in the water while you are playing cards. We were able to bring in two nice eaters (walleyes)around 10:00-11:30 PM. Good Luck

Stillnofish,
How far off the bottom were you fishing that late at night?
jig-em

It's looking like they changed the forecast for LOTW for this weekend. It went from a low tomorrow of -23 to -8. So maybe it won't be as cold as predicted? I sure hope not cuz we're leaving the cities tomorrow morning at 4:00 am and heading to Ballard's. You never know just how the weather and cold will affect the fishing. Last year in Feb. when I was there it was nasty cold with a windchill of -55 and we absolutely killed them. We caught more walleyes in 2 days than I've ever caught in one weekend in my life. It was the best weekend of fishing I've ever had!
Good Luck to ya!

jig-em,
We put glow hooks on and had one pole about a foot off the bottom and another around two feet. We caught a total of three in one night but lost about a 3 pounder at the hole. We did not try the other night, because the alcohol got the better of us. Wish we would of had rattle reals in the home, because we also missed a few when not paying close attention. I'm sure a few of those were eel pout however. Good luck

We always leave enough lines down for all of us when it's "after bite hours" and put something glow on all of the poles. Usually set them at different depths to see what swims by, starting at right off of the bottom going all the way up to about 15'. Be sure to check on your minnow every now and then an reel them up to re-charge the glow. Then when the booze starts sinkin' in real good, just leave the rattle reels down all night until morning. That's usually my alarm clock, is the bell ringing in the a.m. Be sure to hook on some fresh lively minnows before you go to bed so when the school comes through in the night or morning your bait is kicking real good to bring them in. Last year I was awakened at 7:00am to the rattle reel going off. I popped out of bed and was above the hold before the fish got the bobber down no more than 6 inches. I gave a tug and up came a nice 20" eye. What a way to start the day bright and early.
Good Luck!

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏

Hey now, that one is all you! Haha! Don’t make another thread septic. 😉 Yup, the Looper Bug. I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it. 2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too. Such clear water. Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you. The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me. My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said. It hit basically right in front of my face. The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole. That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish. So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow. And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time. Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂 awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug. I remember the first time I was introduced to it. There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot. When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging. I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies. I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs. By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over! Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️ I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home. When I had more of the wander spirit. Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais. Then driving all the way home the same day. 🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!
