Just got back from arnesen's on monday. Fished out on 12 mile reef and did pretty good. Alot of 13 and 14 inch eye's and 1 nice 5 1/2 lbs. eye. got all the eye's on northland fire eyes with a minnow head. bounced them of the bottom and brought them up about 6 inches. did pretty good 11 people in are group. can't wait until next year.

Great report. Question, though....
On top of the reef, on the side, or off the edge in the deep stuff?

What colors were working?

fishing on the southwest side down hill. 27 feet of water slight slope under the house. glow fire eyes that were blue and pink on one and the other was all green. all eyes cought jigging nothing on the bobber lines. little tricky jigging two rods at the same time but it was productive. used my new marcum lx-3 and i saw every fish hit my lure it was great.
[This message has been edited by g3angler (edited 01-22-2004).]

Well we are bringing the ladies up there this weekend for a romantic Valentines Day fishing trip. Has anyone been up there recently? Just wondering how the bite is? We head out on Thursday night. I can't wait to get out of town. Should we bring some shiners? Thanks for the info in advance.

We were up for the day (Saturday) and had our best luck right at the very end of Babbler's Road. It was single lane road out there but navigable by truck. We had pretty constant action from 11:00-4:00 (Walleye & Sauger) almost all were keeper sizes with a few 18-20" thrown in for excitment. We brought home (between 2 of us) 18 fish. We missed a few and let a few go. We were fairly close to where Arneson's has its houses. I can't wait to get back, had a great time! Good Luck!

One more item...Shiners did as well or slightly worse than the chubs. Personally, I don't care for Shiners. They are not as lively and die too quickly. We had our best luck with Northland Tackle Jigs (all colors w/perch eye) and their forage minnow jigs. I had the best luck from my jigging rod vs dead stick.

Here's a report for 2/7 and 2/8.
We fished Saturday all day and Sunday 'till noon. We brought the snow cats and otter sleds, which made being mobile very easy! We fished by gull rock 'till about 10am in about 22' water. Caught one 20" eye and a couple of smaller keepers. Drove out to deeper water and away from all the people for the mid-day. In 32' of water over the mud. This is where we caught the most fish. No big ones but a handful of saugers, 2 big perch -one that was 13" and 3 toulipe. At 3:30 we set up on the edge of 12 mile reef. We talked to one Arneson's house who said they were catching jumbo perch most of the day with a few sauger/walleyes mixed in. We only snagged about 3 more keepers from 12 mile. I could mark them on the Marcum...but they would not hit the lure. We threw our tackle box at them. We saw a couple of suspenders through out the day but none would bite. On Sun. morning we set up close the rock pile again and only managed a couple more. It was much slower and I think the wind must've changed directions. Babler's main road was still managable, but all the side roads were blown over almost completely. All in all our best trip of the year (and it's been a very slow year). For 3 guys we brought home about 20 walleye/saugers along with the big perch and white fish. From the sounds of it we probably did about as good as anyone this weekend.
I have one question I would like to through out there...at what size do most people start keepting sauger/walleye? This weekend we kept 12" and up, but that was only cause we knew we wanted fish to eat and weren't going to even come close to our limit. Do most people though these fish back?

12 inches?!! Let them grow! My self, it's 16 inches for Walleye's and I'll go down to 13 on Saugers. Those 12 inch Walleye's are just babies!

Posted

I usually try to set my min. eye length at 14" but I do tend to keep a few under that up on LOW if I need fish fry material for that night. The smaller ones are usually kept because I brought them in too fast in 30'+ of water and they wouldn't go back down. It seems to happen early in the day before I realize that I gotta slow down the retreive on the little ones. I don't feel guilty at all about a few smaller fish for a fish fry.

How many inches across a five gallon bucket?
For us it has to clear both edges. Red Lake crappies make it easy!
Tully

Heres a Report for 1/22-26th....They put us out on the eastside of gull in 22ft. We were told that they only had 1 house on 12mile,(was lookin forward to some Reefin) and they said it was'nt ready for poeple yet,anyways...The top producers were..chartruce/glow buckshot w/full minnow, Horiz red glow on deadstick. All in all not a bad weekend about 100+ fish. The biggest being 21"...

Was up there last weekend, and caught all my fish on a glow red glow devil with a whole rosey red, not just the head. Didn't even get a bite on shiners or fat heads. We also didn't catch a fish over 14" besides 2 pout that went about 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 lbs. Fishing was pretty slow. Talked to some others guys around us who didn't even have a bite after 10:00am both Friday and Saturday when we were up there. Hopefully things pick up before the Tourney!

Posted

What is a rosey Red? And where do you get them? Also dO the perch bite on grubs?
Thanks!! I can't wait we head up right after work today!!!!!!

Posted

They are a fathead that is about the same orange color as a goldfish
It's a recessive gene in fatheads
You can get them at Lucky's on the east side of Baudette

Posted

Rosey red is a type of minnow. We got them at Lucky's Bait in Baudette I believe. Couldn't tell you about the grub question, I only hooked into one perch while up there on the same rig I talked earlier, but I lost it at the bottom of my hole. Decent size fish too!

Was anyone fishing out of Arnesen's last weekend? If so, how'd you do? 4 of us are headed up this weekend for some fun...
Thanks!
marine_man
[This message has been edited by marine_man (edited 02-17-2004).]

Tully:
5-Gallon pails are approx. 11-1/4" in diameter.

As far as what size fish to keep, normally I like to keep them at 14 inches for walleyes.
But winter on LOW is a different story. Size generally runs real small. Our biggest fish in two days was 17" I think. We were told by one of Arnesons employees if they touch both sides of the pail keep them. I experienced the same thing at Sportsmans too.
I suppose it depends on how many days you are fishing and if you want to take home your limit or be more selective.
[This message has been edited by walleyehawk (edited 02-17-2004).]

Well here is the report from Valentines weekend. We fished Friday and Saturday last weekend. The guides were fantastic. We had a group of seven and caught about 100. This was Mostly sauger and walleye. There we some huge perch and some pout. MMm they were tasty. It was out of hand. We even had a hard time getting drunk because of the hot action. Good luck to you. Hope you do as well as we did.

Made the trek up to LOW last weekend and fishing was tough to say the least - had to really work for them this year! Been going up to Arnesen's the last 5 years or so and the service, staff, guides have always been great. This year was a bit different though. I am not sure if the business has been sold or passed down, but the guides this year were unusually rude and couldn't care less about our needs. To top it off we were picked up at 4:30 one day - the best time to hit the wallys!
Anyhow, on to the report. Yeah, most fish were small (12-13"). I found the best lure was a glow rapala about 3-6" off bottom in about 25 ft of water on 12 mile reef. Drill lots of holes and move around! You'll find there will be one or two "hot holes" where you'll get most of your fish. We actually caught more sauger than wallys - and some monster perch! 3 or 4 went over 12".
Good luck and I'm curious if anyone else noticed the change in service up there?

The business hasn't been sold or passed down and most of the same guides who were there 5 years ago are still there today. They have begun to pick fisherman at 4:30 for as long as I can remember. Not all of you will be picked up at 4:30 though as it takes a while to get them all in. Those bombers continue to bring people in well after dark. If you are really disappointed then I would give Jack, Eddie, or Steve a call and let them know the situation.

I have been going up there for the last 8 years and I have noticed that there service is slipping a little but it is still pretty darn good compared to many places. Last year on our first day of three a guide stopped at 4:30 and said lets go. We said forget it come back in an hour we had talked to one of the other drivers and she had said she would be back to get us around 5:30 so he left and at 5:30 she showed up and took us in. We always have a good trip up there but if the service continues to slide there are several other resorts will to accept my money. We are going up there this next weekend and hopeful the fishing is decent. I too have hear the if the touch nose to tail in the pail keep them I like to wait till they are around 13" or a little bigger but it all depends what you are doing. I make around 6 trips a year up there I don't need my limit everytime if I am catching fish so I am more choose than those guys that go once a year and want to bring the limit back.
------------------
Grip it and Rip it
IFFWalleyes
I Fish For Walleyes
[email protected]

Heading up to Arnesen's from Wisconsin tonight. Staying in sleepers and ice fishing LOTW for the first time. Was wondering if anyone could give me the latest info on lures, location, action, what to expect, etc.
Thanks for the help...
------------------
Just ask for Sam out on the lake. He'll give you the whole #$%@*^^ scoop. smile.gif
Go into the bar just before dinner. It is part of the dining room and you will get current information. Also you could go to the cleaning house right after 5 when people come in and hear what they are catching them on. It changes by day but I would have shiners and/or roseys-they provide shiners. Jigs with some glow or gold/silver do well. If they are not biting, change up. Have different people in the house try different things until you get a pattern. Pay attention as the bite can be light.
Have fun. Wish I could go back this week.

Central America. Focus. We almost went for a local overnight crappie run but the daughter’s septic froze so I got to work the brown trout pond through a 4 inch hole. It was opener today afterall. 😉

Ok, how did we get from crappies and freezing temps to pond slime eaters in south America? Focus! 🙄

The locals there shoot ducks but don't hunt them. If they see a bunch on a pond they'll sneak up and water swat them but it's strictly for food not sport. My buddy runs an outfitter so him and I will hunt a few days and scout then I'll help him with a group whose coming mid week. He's from there. Hoping he can come to Canada next year with me. He's never seen or shot a goose

Awesome kind of trip! I figured there would be a local benefit if you couldn’t bring them back (not saying you can’t). Having a connection down there is pretty cool! We donated a good share of meat to the village in Kotzebue, AK instead of shipping it all back. Pretty pricey and they really appreciated it. Win/win.

I don't bring them back, eat a lot then clean them for the village. Some like them plucked and some like the breasts cut out. It's really remote where I go and the locals live off the land. I know they want me to go get some doves for them too. My buddy is a local so we'll probably go get a deer as well for some venison for some of the elders in the community

🤣 i actually dont mind eating duck...like goose more better though!!!!

Ya cooked em wrong! lol! Not even sure if you can bring ‘em back from Central America? You can’t from Argentina, last I heard.
