Fished Red on Friday. Two of us fished from 3:00 till 7:00 and only were able to muster up 3 crappies. We fshed out of Rogers access. I guess according to the owners the bite had been pretty good much of the week. I saw a bucket full of crappies that were caoght the night before. The guy who caught them said he was out about 1 1/2 miles in 13 ft of water. He said he caught them between 5 and 6:00. As usual I missed the best day. Seems I am always a day late and a dollar short there.<BR>Saturday 5 of us went to LOW. We accessed the lake at Morris point as we heard that the most consistant bite had been there most of the winter. As you know the weather was changing from Friday afternoon till Sat evening. When we got on the lake the winds were blowing NW 15 to 25 mph. Not fun setting up three portables in that kind of weather. We were in 31 ft of water. The fish were really cooperative at first but then shut down. We had some good action for 1/2 hour spurts all day long. We ended up keeping 35 fish, with the largets being a 16" suager. Most of the fish we caught were saugers. Small pink and glow crappie jigs were the ticket on the dead sticks. A med size Zip lure in the glow white and red was the best bet on the jigging pole. In fact I caught most of my fish on that. All in all not a bad day considering the weather conditions. Also as the day went on you couldn't buy a fish on the dead stick only on the jigging poles.

Treeclimber: Thanks for the report. Glad you got into some fish. Sounds like Red was a bit slow. I appreciate the update on the colors on LOW headed up about 530am with my wife. Hope to get into some fish to give her a feel for this great lake. I'll put a report good, or bad on the screen most likely on Thursday as it will be late Wed night when we return. Bill

On Red on Thursday night my father and I put 16 crappies in the bucket off of Rogers. On Friday and Saturday fishing half days off of Zippel in 27.5 ft. of water did very well with the eyes biggest 4lb. 3oz. with several between one and two pounds. Didn't get enough of the Red lake crappies so we tried it again on Saturday night. Got 15 more got two that went 1lb. 15oz. Didn't move on any days either good fishing for us I guess! Guys fishing by us had two here and two there.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
