A little prose by Jim W.
Lake of the Woods/ March Ice Fisherman’s Lament
I can’t stop thinking about LOW!!! I have slipped too far in to the dream cone, though enjoying it ever so. I need to step foot onto the hard layer of water that hides beneath a yield of fish, paramount to biblical proportions! Fish with large wielding teeth, fish with thick backs and colors represented in the rainbow. I envision fish that fight and fish that are savored among a team of hard water hunters.
Upon it’s frozen shelf we stand in wonderment, and crouch in a electronic daze! The feeling of societal abandonment, survival, comfort and exhilaration simultaneously
Merge to form the revelation we have some to know as….”The March Trip”!!
Camaraderie, not taking a back seat, is often lifted high above the pine, black spruce and tamaracks! Jubilation trumpets outward, far and beyond our temporary home on the ice!
In climax, a true predator fish has found itself entrapped in a cylindrical nightmare!! Perilously and unwilling, the King of the ice blanketed bay, momentarily will learn how to fly!!!!

Jim Wernimont
Jim, yes I actually do fish LOW quite often even though living 310 miles away. I used to live up in Warroad and TRF. Fishing this winter is just plain goofy. Something is going on... We used to be able to catch a nice bunch of good eaters. Now we have to give'em the boot test... if they aren't 13-14 inches or so they go back. We would often fish Buffalo Bay and be ready for the half-hour before dark. The Walleyes would hit and hit hard and you'd have your limit.
The Bay has been absolutely dead this year so far. Something is going on... Anyway, have a good time up north. Go out on the mud flats, away from the traffic and you'll do alright.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏
