Im going up to LOW on the last weekend of this month for my 1st LOW trip. Im super excited to get into a nice bite. I cant remember getting into a good walleye/sauger bite since I was a kid on Upper Red Lake. My buddy Pete works at Wigwam, so I hope he knows the spots. Anyone have any tips for the 1st timer at LOW? Do I need to bring my Vexilar? etc?
Mike--

Hey Mike, I remember my first trip up and have lots of great memories. Wigwam is a great place and I am sure they will put you on fish. Staff there are super friendly and will go out of their way to make you comfortable. Next time up, that is were I am staying.
Fishing tips. Gold is the color for sure. The real secret is the jigging technique.
Forget fishing a foot or two off the bottom with sharp lifts. Instead, drop all the way to the bottom and let it rest there, lift just a little and then bang it back down on the bottom, this creates a puff of sand and does attrack fish. Now lift it ever so slowly off the bottom, LIFT SLOWLY, no sharp jigging motions. Slow is key here. You will feel a tick or bump or you might just feel weight. It is when you feel the weight, set the hook. Another trick is when you use just a minnow head as an attracker, don't cut it off cleanly with a knife. Instead pinch or rip it off with your thumb. This leaves little tentacles of loosely hanging flesh and fish can not resist both the look and smell.
Yes, you got to take your Vex as it will tell you the moods. If the above technique of a slow lift doesn't do the trick, then start experimenting and watch your Vex to see if the fish respond or not.
Good luck.

I remember my first trip up there five years ago. My brother and I raced up there get in the sleeper shanty around 2:00 am. Get our lines down and wait and wait. By sun up we were ready to get our money back!
Been back many times since.
A flasher helps and is fun when the fish are really active. Usually the fish are clost to the bottom (6 inches) although early this December they were going several feet off the bottom in 17 ft. of water to take the emarald shiner minow.
I used to use gold and now use a #4 demon glow hooks on my vexilar hole and a plain hook on my set line.
Been up there and snunked all day with fatheads then got emerald shiners and slammed them.

Once when we stayed up there, we were at Cyrus. At that time, they had no sleepers and we asked them why. They explained to us that night fishing is no good up there and they felt people would not want to stay out there if there was no action until sunrise. They would take us out just a few minutes before sunrise and pick us up just before sunset. Our action usually was hot and heavy first thing up until 10 or so, then slow down until around 3, then pick up again.
Oh we could catch fish late morning and early afternoon but nothing like those couple hour windows first thing and later. Low lite bitters for sure but no light, no bite. A creel census taker came along and explained it pretty much the same way.
Have things changed up there? Anyone care to share their nite bite experiences?

Yes, my father said the other day, "fish have to bite up here at night" I said take five dead shiners put them on a hook and let it lay on the bottom. He caught three pout that night. Next morning he said "boy Doug, the walleyes sure don't bite at night up here"!!! That's why Upper Red is only an hour away I said.

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏

Hey now, that one is all you! Haha! Don’t make another thread septic. 😉 Yup, the Looper Bug. I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it. 2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too. Such clear water. Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you. The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me. My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said. It hit basically right in front of my face. The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole. That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish. So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow. And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time. Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂 awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug. I remember the first time I was introduced to it. There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot. When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging. I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies. I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs. By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over! Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️ I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home. When I had more of the wander spirit. Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais. Then driving all the way home the same day. 🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!
