Water levels seems to be topic of the day. I'm visiting over Memorial Day week. Docks are not in on the island where I stay. Wondering if the water is going down? What do the rivers look like? Are they just pouring our water?? Is water level 6" lower than a few days ago?

We’re in the same boat. Actually I’d like to be in any boat. Our island cabin dock frame is about six inches under water. I hear that water is not rising which gives hope it will fall but I think Memorial Day is too optimistic, at least for us. You should think about other plans?

Water level is going down, but slowly.  My dock frame was 6" underwater last week and I can just see it above water today.  It's going to take time.

I realize it's only been 2 days Raven77, but are you continuing to see the level decreasing?

Yes, water levels are going down. From Shamrock marina…… it’s dropped 4 inches since last weekend.

Thanks for the update Del. Neighbor by Frazer / Smarts Bay said he received about 2 1/2 inches through the long weekend. I assume that will increase the water level 4-5 inches? Going to wrong direction as we wait to get our boards on our dock

Super big winds aren’t helping anyone who put the boards down and didn’t take the extra step of cable ties, bricks, etc.  significantly less docks in compared to same time last year. Most took the extra step of securing boards.  Can’t really tell if water went up with the wind whipping.

Water level is back up 4-6" after the recent rain.  I put the dock cribs down on my east dock on Saturday and secured them in place with treated 2x4's down both sides of the dock.  With 30+ mph winds out of the SW this morning I had to go out on the bucking dock to add additional boards.  Cribs were coming out of the water a foot with me standing on them.  It was a rodeo but so far my dock is still in place.  Happy that my boat is in my shed!  I'm predicting it will be at least 3 weeks before I can get my west dock in, which is the dock connected to my boat lift.

These updates are much appreciated friends. Looks like we are pretty much back to square one (opener weekend) as far as water levels are concerned

Thanks for the update Brian even though it’s bad news. Like Andy said, these updates are appreciated as we keep moving back our plans to get to our island.

My Stuntz Bay boathouse deck is covered with knee-deep water.  Had to use waders to get into the boat.  The old picture shows what normal summer water levels are on Vermilion.  Now the water is 32" higher than shown in this picture.  Should have taken a current photo of the front to show the comparison.  The water is currently several inches above the high-water mark on the boathouse doors.  My boat (no windshield or roof) cleared the door with a few inches to spare.

I was up this weekend and left today. The fishing was very good on Sunday!  I’m on the north side of Pine. The water appears to be down about 4-6” from opener. I put about half my dock boards down and strapped them into place in case the water goes back up.

left pine island on sunday.  metal frame on drop in dock was 6-8" above water level.  Put wood down, but zip tied it in place.

Most of the docks are not in yet.  One of the dock companies sent out an update last week.  They basically said most docks need another 3-6" of less water under them in order to install decking without risk of pallet loss due to wind or waves. The measurement they shoot for with a low percent chance for pallet loss is approximately 8-10" below the bottom of the top rail. Most docks are not ready yet.

We just got back from our trip. Although the water is still a bit high for this time of year, it seemed pretty normal.  I saw no docks under water from Oak Narrows/Smart Bay to the far west end.

Water level continues to drop.  Hope I can go in the boathouse without boots during this week's trip.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
