Hey guys, heading up to Zippel next Friday. Just wondering how the eye's are biting?
We head up there every year and really havn't hit the big ones ever. Plenty of fish, but nothing over 18" or so. Any help would be appreciated

Four of us were out of Zipple last weekend. Lots of small walleyes and saugers. Biggest walleye was almost 19". We were in 28' of water. Going again this weekend, but going out a little deeper (30'). Good luck on the big ones.

Heading to Zipple this weekend as well. Any tips (bait of choice, structure, depth, lure of choice) would be appreciated. Heard that lots of numbers of fish have been being caught recently. Looking forward to some good walleye action.

27.5 ft of water was the ticket this last Friday and Saturday on Zippel Bay. Got a 4lb 3oz eye and tons of others between one and two pounds. Best quality fish I've ever seen up there in 5 years of fishing with 2-3 trips per year and 3-4 days per trip.
One thing I'v learned, watch the rattle reels, fish very close to bottom and don't forget the emerald shiners!

I also am going to be up there from Friday through Monday afternoon. We are staying in a sleeper out of Zipple Bay Resort. I guess the sleeper house is in about 15 feet of water and the day house is in 27 feet. Does anyone know if there is any kind of night bite? I know that I have read that it shuts down at sunset and all you catch after dark is pout, but I was thinking that since the sleeper house is in 15 feet we may catch some Eye's passing through. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Latz

someone on this forum a while back had said they caught some eyes at night, although this is the exception not the rule. What I do know of the lake is from experience and experience has told me they stop biting at sunset. Ive been told it;s because of the bog stained water, I guess the eyes can't see in it either, but if one mosey's through and runs into your bait, they might bite

Reel,
That is what I was thinking. I have been up there a couple of time a year for the last few and we have always stayed in a cabin and had the bombers take us out to the day houses. Every time when we come in we see a ton of people just starting to fish and I have to believe they are catching something. I guess the worst case is that we may catch a few stragglers while we play some cards and have some drinks.
Latz

I have heard from many people that the fish are biting good around Zipple. Hope you get into some nice ones. Have fun and let us know how you did.
Reel

Will do. Four of us are going up and bringing our portables along just in case we decide to venture out of the resort houses. We are going to hit it pretty hard for 3 days and see what happens. I will post a report when I get back.
Thanks,
Latz

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
