I have been coming up for the last three years looking to catch a big pike. We have been fishing around Swift ditch most of the time in the past and the largest one I have caught is a 17 pounder. Could anyone tell me another good spot to go and try??? I have been having good luck at swift ditch but not the big one yet. I have seen many large fish come out of the lake but haven't had the pleasure of catching one and putting back down the hole. Thanks

Depends on what time of year you're talking about. Late season is the best pike fishing by far. They move into the bays and scavenge. Mid to late march is PRIME man. I would suggest my favorite places out in the bay at Morris Point, Zippel Bay or try warroad. I targeted pike on my last trip in early january and got skunked. But late season is the time they are most vulnerable... Hope this helps<BR>'gutz

Last year we were up at South Buffalo fishing for eyes and I got into a "gator" that went 38.75" and had to let it go. We didnt have a scale but we figured that it had to go at least 20lbs. It was a fat hog. I'm try'n to think of what time of year it was and am thinking it was during the later part of the winter. I remember talking to Curt about this fish and he said that the weekend before that him and a friend or brother had caught like 4 of them that size. So maybe the springsteel/s.buff area later ice would be good. I usually dont fish for "gators" but after that fight, I cant wait to rip the lips of another one. I remember we tried to stretch another inch and a half out of her but failed! Got some pics and "stuffed" it back down the hole. Good times!

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion.  Ice was in very good condition.  Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park.  There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing.  The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out.  The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island.  There is a short spur road going east about half mile out.   The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes.  Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher.  The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight.  You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas.  There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off.  Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them.   Fishing was average.  Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit.  Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75".  Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes.   Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
