I just had to put my 13 yr old black lab down last week. I'm looking to get a new puppy. Would like a female, but not opposed to a male. I'm getting up in age-63, so, it'll be more of a fishing dog than a hunting dog. I'll probably go chasing roosters and grouse less than 10 times per year. Want something under 70lbs. Hopefully 😀 something with British lines. Under $1000.00. Anybody know someone with a litter? Thanks

Yes, sorry to hear you had to do that!

I don’t know of a littler but just wanted to ask if you’ve considered a golden retriever?  I’ve been around labs and golden’s for quite a while now, mostly friends dogs, but had a lab that made 13 also.  Loved that dog!  But I’d seriously consider a golden for my next one if I ever got another.  Much calmer breed and just as good of bird dog.

Just my 2 cents.  Good luck!

My neighbor had a golden, it was a great dog. I have thought about it, but I'm a lab guy. Thanks

I see several pups on Craigslist. May want to check it out. I currently have a yellow lab springer I got on Craigslist . He has been the best trainable dog I’ve ever had. Just so full of energy. Had him for 4 years and hope he stays healthy for several more.

I looked at a litter off craigslist Saturday. A couple that were available had diarrhea, the mother hardly had any hair on the front of her chest and I could go on. Just didn't get a good feeling about them, which I'm glad I was able to walk away from them. I thought I'd jump on the first available pups I saw after loosing my dog and wanting a new pup.

Try not to factor in price when choosing a puppy and a breeder. In the grand scheme of things the purchase price is one of the lowest costs you will incur over the life of the dog.

For $1k I would hope you can get a lab with a health guarantee and a clean bill of health. If you’re not buying from a breeder who offers that I would suggest you to keep looking.

Its likely with the pandemic and everybody buying dogs they may be hard to come by right now. I would suggest getting on a waiting list or put down a deposit rather than looking for something that you can get right now without the promise of a health guarantee.

I've always looked for a pup with all the certifications, health guarantees, etc. I always wanted to increase my chances of getting a healthy dog with very good to excellent hunting lineage. Now with me getting older (63) and just retiring, hunting stock is not quite as important. I'm looking more for an overall great healthy, family dog to be more of a fishing, being with me all the time partner. That being said, I still need to find a good responsible breeder.  At most I'll be chasing roosters and walking logging trails for grouse several times a year. I figured for about a grand, I could find something to fit my needs. That being said, I haven't dog shopped for 13 years🙂. I've watched more YouTube videos on breeders, picking pups, socializing, training, etc. than I can count, trying to get back in the swing of things. Keep the thoughts coming.

Hopefully, she'll have me whipped into shape by then 🙂. I was thinking of getting her a treadmill, so I can sit in the chair and relax while she gets her workout🙂🙂.

I have lots of boxes of 12g Federal / Winchester 7.5/8shot lead trap loads, but have recently picked up a 20g OU and can't find any ammo for Wednesday night trap nights. Let me know if you'd be willing to swap a box (or more) of 12g for similar 20g loads. My ammo is stored in ammo cans indoors with desiccant packs, and all relatively new, (1-2 years) my supply is constantly being refreshed. Apple Valley / Lakeville area.

I was drawn for the 2021 bear lottery but can't hunt this year due to a medical procedure. Do I lose my preference points for next year, or does it stay the same or do I get another point?

Scouting through the woods I found a very old and definitely abandoned deer stand. They are everywhere. I usually like to poke around the old ones to see what might have been left behind. I found this old coffee can with wire woven into the bottom. I've never been a hunter but am assuming that this was a home-made "stove" for keeping warm on a cold fall day. However, I'm far from an expert so I leave it to the internet.

Who's ready to turkey hunt?  Season A starts in less than a month.

I think I'm going to go during season B this year to avoid the initial wave of hunting pressure.  I went during season A last year and there was noticeably more hunting pressure in the area.  I think it was because of the pandemic and people were kinda cooped up, plus it was the first year they lifted the lottery.

Pike suckers are about 3½ inches long.  Walleyes really like them in the fall and early winter.  Caught my fish in 13-15 FOW drifting slowly.  Good solid bites.

Got up Thursday evening to rain and pretty heavy wind Friday morning had us holding off on putting the boat in the water. Fished briefly Friday evening at sunset and picked up an 18" and a couple smalls. Fishing was decent Saturday morning but no real size, everything was 12-15". I had one that looked to be 17"ish flop off as I was trying to flip it into the boat. All the fish we caught were in 17-22'. We were fishing around about a 6' top but never caught anything on top. They appeared to be relating to the structure but not actually on it. Tried again Saturday evening for a couple hours and continued to pick up small walleye just like the morning. Sunday was windy again but we decided to slug it out for awhile and caught one decent perch and one small walleye. We fished similar depths and spots as Saturday but they weren't there. Marked them out in 35'+ but didn't feel like fighting the wind out in the big water so we called it quits around noon and never went back out(the wind never really did lay down or we may have tried again). Jig/minnow way outfished bottom bouncers/crawlers. Wish bottom bouncers would have worked better because it was tough to keep a jig down as fast as we were drifting and we never found a school to spot lock on.

I am heading up there tomorrow.  Where do you guys get minnows up in the area?  Tower or Cook or down in Virginia?  I have never heard of pike suckers?  How large are they?  Are you guys fishing the East or West side of the lake?  Let me know.  I am thinking of fishing the East side tomorrow and then headed to the west side from Thursday thru Sunday.  Any help would be appreciated?  I am a newby to the area.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!
