SkunkedAgain

Scouting through the woods I found a very old and definitely abandoned deer stand. They are everywhere. I usually like to poke around the old ones to see what might have been left behind. I found this old coffee can with wire woven into the bottom. I've never been a hunter but am assuming that this was a home-made "stove" for keeping warm on a cold fall day. However, I'm far from an expert so I leave it to the internet.

What is this?

I agree with Mike. Back in the 60's & 70's Maxwell House 3# coffee cans had 5 ridges/rings. Note the wire attached to center ring suspending charcoal mid can allowing ash to fall to the bottom. Time rusted the bottom of the can out. The 2 pounder can also worked well to pre heat your old Buick engine after a night on the ice in -20 deg temp.

They may have been doing a Honey burn for Bears?  Using sticks instead of charcoal?

I could easily see that being an old charcoal burner for heat.

When we were kids we used to make heaters out of cans by punching some breather holes in about the center of the can and fill it to that line with sand, then soak with fuel oil (our house was heated with fuel oil).  Light it and get a pretty decent slow burn.  When the flame died out we just stirred the sand to expose new oil to be wicked up.

It wasn’t the be all, end all of inventions but we thought they were cool.

My old man did some very odd stuff to say the least. He would take coffee cans, wire them up like that, put charcoal on top of the wire and put it under his chair while hunting to stay warm. Zero idea how he shot/shot at so many deer with something like that and while smoking a pack or two of darts every day in the stand

I remember one old timer that used a coffee can with a roll of toilet paper soaked in alcohol . I have used rags soaked in fuel oil in a coffee can placed under my oil pan to help start the truck.

Still effective way to get low flame heat. You also get a nice hospital smell. Distil some moonshine and your oder free.

We're having daily heat adversey,  20+ days of 90 deg. Hang in there. NOAA and Federal forecast just announced the Midwest has a 95% chance of a January through March La Nina which means a cold winter and above average snow fall. Early ice may be a challange with forecasted colder and wetter October through December.

I have lots of boxes of 12g Federal / Winchester 7.5/8shot lead trap loads, but have recently picked up a 20g OU and can't find any ammo for Wednesday night trap nights. Let me know if you'd be willing to swap a box (or more) of 12g for similar 20g loads. My ammo is stored in ammo cans indoors with desiccant packs, and all relatively new, (1-2 years) my supply is constantly being refreshed. Apple Valley / Lakeville area.

Brand new Motor Guide Tour w/ Pin Point for sale. It's new in the box, never been used.
Looking to get $1500 for it. Delivery is possible within reason.

There are more resorts and cabins than one could shake a stick at on Vermilion. Besides the casino, are there any resorts that offer "hotel" rooms in a main building on a nightly basis versus renting cabins on a weekly basis?

Counting the days, and looking for cooler weather also. As always, your  pictures are excellent !  How is the fire situation, and what is the lake level ? I'm worried BIDEN is going for another lock down, which isn't going to play out well here. Pray for the best, prepare for the worst. Thanks as always for the pictures !!!

My wife and I were out on Tuesday from noon to 3pm. Light east south east wind using jig and minnow. We caught over 30 walleyes with quite a few double headers. The biggest was 23” and another 7 in the 18”-21” range. 10 were in the 14”-17” slot range but did not keep any with the rest being 12”-13”. Water temperature was at 73.5 degrees. Air temperature was at 86 degrees.

Been awhile since any reports so here goes.  A tough summer this has been. Never saw so many weeds yet there is very little wild rice. Fishing has been tough to say the least.  No real pattern, nor walleyes are not in there usual summer haunts it seems. Been so slow we headed up to Leech last week for a Musky trip.   Non caught but four follows,   one on Pelican reef that was in the mid 40" range.  Then back to Whitefish for a few more hours of no activity.  Even the panfish are slow.  Anybody with any better reports lets here them.  Lord send some rain.

I bought an old fashioned tv antenna and mounted it on my deck. I get CBS, NBC and my network. I’m on the north side of Pine

Not up there but camper in Nisswa, mn. I bought a really big like 12' foot long antennae on about a 15' pole.  I was only getting about 3 channels in but I bought one of these powered pre-amp's at Fleet Farm and now get about 12 channels and can watch the Viks again! 👍 It helps to keep turning your antennae and running a channel search until you find the right spot.  Good Luck.
