Hey all! Tomorrow (Apr 3rd) I'm taking some friends out to do some fishing. We usually target rivers, and live around the metro, but I'm willing to drive a ways to find good spots. No boat, so this would be shore fishing.
We aren't after anything specific but would be nice to get something to fry up later! Which of course means targeting legal fish like carp, suckers, cats, panfish, etc.

I've heard this river has plenty of catfish. I've tried my luck a couple times at the canoe launch but nothing (lots of carp here). Are there any spots that are tried and true? I use a carolina rig with whatever weight I have on hand, circle or octopus hook, usually crawlers but have also tried fresh cut sucker.

Good morning everyone! I hope you all have had better luck than me recently. I'm beginning to think I need a wise mentor to guide me because the kitties continue to elude me... I have been to Peninsula point park in Anoka, Crow river near Rockford, Coon Rapid's dam (BP side), and a handful of metro lakes (Harriet, Bde Maka Ska, lake of the Isles, and Wirth).
I have the following areas picked out for my next trips:
Gray's Bay on lake Minnetonka Hidden falls Minnehaha where it meets the Mississippi I have been using crawlers or cut suckers on a carolina rig. Sometimes I'll switch it up and lighten the weight for a float.
I suspect a possible gar sighting on one of my trips, but it cut the line (40lb test braid) with a fierce head shake. A clean cut right at the hook. I wish I could have gotten a better look at it 😩 It hasn't all been bad though! I caught some other species in the process and met some awesome people.

looking to try cut bait for catfishing. Usual use nightcrawlers or stink bait, but am looking to filter the Rockbass and small cats.
I'm gunna buy a couple decoy suckers and use. But am wondering how to humanely kill and cut up? Or do I just cut umm alive while flopping like a serial killer?

So tomorrow the 29th I’m headed over to the ford dam for some flatheads or channel cats. This is a free invitation to anyone who would like to join me for some relaxing time on the river!!! Feel free to message me for more details!! Planning on heading out at 10 and fishing until dark.

What works best for catfishing in the F/M area?
Whats the contour of the Red River like for someone to see where to fish?
Are any of the dam spots good for catfishing?
What has worked for you?

I got up Sunday afternoon. I'm debating dropping my dock in, I want my dock builder/ barge company to see the lean or torque that's on it since they made the "L" permanent. One boat came out of Black Bay when we were fishing. Did you happen to notice the water temp in the bay? -

I saw a few boats out in the water but not as many as I expected for a nice weekend. When I left on Sunday night I noticed that your dock was still up, but I think your lights were on. It was tough though to see through the raindrops pelting my face! Fun times on the lake. -

Thanks for the retirement wishes! Spent the first official day putting in a new onboard charger in my boat and doing a little road maintenance with my neighbor. Just sat on the neighbors dock for an hour and got one crappie. Start of retirement feels great! -

Congrats! I've got another 5 or 6 years to go before retirement. Plan to spend half the year at Vermilion and half in Hawaii. Already saving up for a saltwater fishing boat. -

I was able to hit the chain on Saturday and cruised around a bit to see if I could find what the walleye were doing. Appears they should be spawning and did find what I think were a couple females just based on the location I found them. 50° on the river and saw as low as 47° on the main lake. -

I was out 4 different mornings. Very difficult hunt. I never saw a Tom. Usually when we go out we can get the Toms to gobble to at least let us know where they are roosting but this year they wouldn't gobble to a call at all. Most wouldn't gobble until almost shooting hour and if they did gobble it was on there own. I didn't really want to hunt season A but I had to because of work. I think the cold weather must of had something to do with it. -

And just a few days later, I got my first 10inch bluegill of the season. Same body of water Royce got his from, but clearly a different shaped hen bluegill. As always, trophy size fish get released😁 VID_20210418_110303001~2.mp4 -

First outing this spring turned out fairly successful. Not consistent action yet but enough to stay interested. Nothing bigger than 12 inches though. All were released fully alive to complete the reproductive process.
