Lead ban proposal

gimruis

Question

gimruis

Another proposal to ban certain items of lead in fishing tackle has been introduced.  I think this came to a bubble in 2018 when they tried to do it plus banning lead ammo on public lands.  The current proposal does not include ammo (as far as I can tell) and only applies to jigs and sinkers less than 2.5 inches in length.  In 2018 it did not pass.  If passed, it would take effect July 1, 2025.

Bunch of BS. They never quit.

I'm sure its just another proposal to please a few disgruntled constituents.  In the rare event that it does pass, it will not be enforced until July 1, 2025 so you have 4+ years to upgrade all your lead sinkers and jigs to something else.

it seems to be the trend...one day I believe all lead, or almost all will be phased out in fishing equipment. Was not long ago we saw the first tungsten ice jigs hit the market, now finding a lead ice jig  is getting harder to come by in stores.  You can already buy sinkers and jigs that are lead free, they are becoming more and more available. The only real reason lead hasn't been totally phased out yet is the cost of the alternative.

As long as there's old molds around and tire weights, it will go underground! 😄

Personally I'm fine with them forcing us to go lead-free. Yes I love using lead, but in the end, the slight imposition it will cause on most of us should be outweighed by the benefits to the lakes. I guess, in short, I care more about the lakes than I do the inconvenience this will force on me but I definitely understand why people don't want a ban.
