Sled and porty GTG outing

Recommended Posts

leech~~

Can't seem to ever get a sled ride together anymore on the other side of the wall.

Any guys with a sled and porty want to get together for a meetup and fish somewhere some weekend for the day or weekend if way up north?

Crappies-Walleyes both?

Mill Lacs, Brainerd area................?   The more the merrier, safety in numbers helps if someone needs a pull or getting out of slush.

Not a big plan. Meet at a lake. Stare at the lake map, mark a spot or spots on the gps and head out.

Not really worried about a cookout, but we could just cuts into fishing time.  Bring our own lunch, bait and pop or?

Don't want to count out wheelers with portys but hope you can hang if its deep or slushy. 😕

Oh forget the Public service announcement: Portys must be fished at least 6' feet apart or more!. Wearing a mask is a good idea on a cold sled ride. No talking about Trump, Biden or God will also keep us safe from each other! 😆

So again, no big complicated plan. Meet up, check map, go fishing! 👍

Possibly... 🙂

My sled needs some work but I might take a run at that this weekend if I’m not fishing. Brainerd would be an easy one for me but I wouldn’t mind getting a group together to fan out on Leech or Winnie to dial a pattern in.  An honest seek and destroy mission to cover water and share info, not compete for best catch.  Even a group of 4 can increase efforts ten fold.

My issue is usually timing but I think I have a chance over the next few weekends.

Stinks when fishing gets in the way of fishing! 😁

I'm game for any lake to try. Hope we can find some place with enough parking for a few vehicles and trailers to unload.

Agree no competition, finding new spots is always fun and your not giving up spots of your own.

Brainerd area is a good central spot with some nice size lakes. I seem to always pull something out of Pelican.  But open to any lake.

How about a Lake Bigstone get together take 2, 2021 Covid edition?

I need to see first hand if @Wanderer can still hole hop like a madman. And hopefully the fish would cooperate better this year lol

I’ll just toss this one out there too in case metro guys don’t want to travel, and in honor of the most responses in a thread that isn’t Vermilion: Minnetonka.

I still didn’t drill as much as I wanted to. 😊

By the way, I’m not opposed to buying a non-res license either. 😉

Never ice fished Tonka. Someone that has will have to keep us from running in the wrong places. Heard some stories of bad spots out there? 😬

Respect it like you would Burntside.  It’s really a metro lake made for snowmobile ice fishing.  Shorter runs for sure but really the same type of deal.

Yeah with a ton of bays with channels that don't always freeze over.  Never said I haven't sledded on lakes like the Gull chain or Whitefish chain with a lot of channels. 🙄  Just said, I never ice fished Minnetonka before.

DNR: at least 5 dead after falling through ice this season

BMTN Staff

Updated: Mar 8, 2018

On Lake Minnetonka, there have been more than a dozen incidents where either a vehicle or snowmobile have broken through the ice this winter.

Not to dampen anyone's enthusiasm for fishing Minnetonka, but I have been fishing it since the late 60s. Even in normal winter's (whatever that is) there can be bad spots away from shore due to springs or schooling fish and the channels can be sketchy too. Many times there are pressure ridges at the mouths of the channel than one can break through. Just ask my dad, and he was walking. If you're set on Tonka I'd suggest picking an area of the lake with large bays so you wouldn't have to go through a channel or it would minimize the number of channels you went through. Now if someone has been out this winter and knows it's safe that's a different story or if you check the channels before you go through them. It's a fun lake to fish year 'round but especially in the winter. There are a lot of fish in it.

Good advice @Hookmaster.

I don’t think ever entered a channel on the lake in the winter.  I’ve always played it like you described.

67 we’re probably you, 😉 but yeah 500 is a lot without a few more replies.

If folks want to bring more activity to the site, this one of the ways to do it. If anyone has any other ideas to put out there it’s wide open.  Except the date should be while game fish is open.

Or, are people wanting to have a spot all set up to fish rather than going through the process of dialing a couple in?  I always find it interesting to see how others approach a spot and what’s on their mind when setting up.  I’m confident in how I go about a lot of things but amazingly enough tend to learn something significant from most people I fish with.  Depends on what you’re looking for though I suppose.

Fished Lake of the Woods yesterday during this tropical heat wave.. I'll tell you what, if you're planning on fishing in these temps, bring backup gear for your essentials (Heat, Auger, etc). Doing this was key for us yesterday when the buddy heater hose was acting up due to the cold. We had a fun day! Check out the video below:

Just wondering when jigging for eyes in the winter, why is the standard to tip a jig with a minnow head and not the whole minnow or the minnow tail?  Would seem like a more natural presentation to tip with the tail and not the head.  Anyone experimented with this?

Leech Lake.  I am wondering what to expect.  I think I might go out on Boy bay using the public landing on Sugar Point.  First are there any safety concerns, ice conditions to worry about, Landing safe?  Second what can I expect for fish? Kind of looking for some nice panfish during the day and a stray walleye or two towards evening

Alright, looking for insight from some people who know more about sitting and waiting for fish than I do.  Last year I bough some tip ups and had some luck on them but now I see it appears to be all the rage to use the IFish Pro stuff and use a rod and reel.  Anybody out there feel like these actually do any better than a standard old tip up or is it just about not having a mess of line on the ice after having a flag.  Moved to MN from mostly fishing northerns on tip ups which didn't seem to care about things not spinning as smooth as these darn walleyes do around here.  Would a rod and reel system like the ifish pro or finicky fooler actually help to have less false flags? I'm at a bit of a loss here with the more picky fish.

12/3/20 a female posted 4" ice on the Coon lake channel with photo of someone in a hub fishing. A comment stated someone also caught a 24" walleye in the channel. Over the years you may see a half dozen anglers early ice on the channel. Saturday 12/5 I stopped by the channel and counted about 54 anglers crowded in the 300' x 800' channed and 6 or so cars driving around looking for a place to park. Yesterday 60+ crowded the channel. Really hard to fix stupid. Walleye slot over 17". Won't be long before DNR Walleye reduction changes.

Hi Everyone, this is my first post here.

I am looking for some tips or tricks to break down some of the water in the Northeast part of Vermilion for ice fishing opportunities. We will be up in that area for a week at the start of January and I have no idea how to know what the ice conditions typically are that time of year. We are debating on bringing snowmobiles or an ATV, but I'm not even sure what works better up there this time of year.

For people who fish up in this area often:
Do you seem to have better luck trying the big lakes, or breaking down smaller bodies of water? Is it worth the trip to try and snowmobile / hike / dogsled your gear up into any of the BWCA lakes? If you were brand new to this area, where would you try first for the safest ice, and best chance at some fun fishing early Janurary? Or are most lakes "safe" by then? Are typical walleye / Crappie presentations good in this area? Any go to baits or hooks?
I'm not looking for honey holes or specific GPS locations (unless you're willing to share), but I'm more interested in how to break down some of the smaller bays and channels in Vermilion for Walleye and Crappie. Part of the fun for me is finding them on my own by putting together information.

Any tips are much appreciated, and I'll share any knowledge I learn on our trip with you all.

      Dan

well gentlemen, i got my fires under control and moved, but i woke up this morning feeling pretty tough.🤒🥴 i waited till this afternoon to decide but unfortunately i need to bow out tomorrow. 😪 with the current status of things 😷😷 i do NOT want to risk giving this to anyone else. i'm certain its just a head cold but not taking chances...... i feel pretty rough.   sorry guys i was really, really looking forward to fishing with you guys, and didnt want to wait any longer letting you guys know..........good luck, have fun. i'm sure there will be other opportunities before ice goes away!!!!!!🤧

I fully agree that lakes go through cycles but that negates nothing I said.  MNs best walleye fisheries are that way because they have a slot.  Rainy, Winnie, Leach, Mille Lacs, and Red were destroyed and the slots brought them back.  Lake of the woods a slot was put in before it got depleted and that fishery is awesome so easy to catch a limit there and a great mix of small fish and jumbos...just a matter of time for other lakes.  Can you be more specific what lakes you are referring to that have just large fish and no slot?  If it is not one of the well known lakes be careful if you name it here its fished out in 3 years if it does not have a slot guaranteed.

I don't think it will impact anything... but I also agree it is dumb.  It's not logical that I can buy it on line sight unseen but need to be present at a store.

      they are a team!!!
    • walleye101
Minnesota's best walleye fisheries are anything but stable populations. These populations are constantly cycling with new robust year classes recruiting to the fishery every few years. Harvest of excess spawning stock actually stimulates frequent strong recruitment. The closest thing we have to stable walleye populations are lakes dominated by old fish with low to moderate recruitment replacing natural mortality from the aging population.
    • smurfy

Guys, going back to the original post, the DNR did this to be in compliance with state and federal laws, not just be a PIA.   It doesn’t have to make sense, it just has to make code, as my saying goes.   We don’t normally make a special trip to buy our combo license; we just pick it up at our best convenience either heading to the lake or doing other shopping.  It’s really not going to be that significant of an issue for us since we do travel and shop together fairly regularly. 🙂
