I bought a cabin on hand lake this year, and was woundering if there are any ice fishing reports for the area? I noticed that there are not any reports for this area for a long time, maybe thats a good sign, as its all secret. I was located in palisade, and just moved here this year, looking for general info, nothing specific.

I can say the ice seems good, if you stay away from the slush.

I had a friend that has a cabin or did on Hand lake.  The only thing I can tell you is what he said. The fish are big on Hand lake and the mosquitoes are even bigger! Not sure if that helps? ? ?

Ox yolk is always good for some sunny and crappie action. Pine mountain has produced some good evening walleye catches. Tons of lakes to explore in the area. Some of the best bites won't be found without getting out and drilling lots of holes.

I agree, I rode the sled today, and tomorrow is all fishing, have to get my new 40V strikemaster out on the lake and catch something, gills, crappies or anything thats willing to bite.

The 30.20 barometer probably didn’t help much.  But it also might be worth trying shallower?

10 feet seemed to be good in the past week on a few lakes and have read here that even shallower has been doing well for some.

the lakes are very low, making it difficult to launch a boat. the dock at my lakes access is almost completely out of the water. I was thinking about going to little boy next weekend, anyone have a report on that access?

ice fishing has begun in the backus area. I walked out about 20 feet, did not punch any holes, but it looked like 4 good solid inches. some lakes capped over thursday night, so be careful, as the ice thickness will not be the same all over. my lake had open water in middle of lake, but capped over thursday.

not much happening on the lake this winter the slush is that bad. only ones out have walked pulling portables. snowmobile is the only travel, and that gets a bit iffy in some areas, no stopping, and plenty of horsepower to get through some areas.

Dang, all the slush reports from all over is making it hard to decide on trying fishing, or just go snowmobiling?  🤪

Um, yeah I like to ride on trails in the woods not on lakes. Their cold, windy, slushy and boring with nothing to see. 😒

I will give this a bump, so we can give updates on ice out. I tryed fishing last weekend, many lookers but no takers. before the latest snow event, the lake was much easier for travel, and about 24 inches of ice.

I have not been fishing of late, its hunting season now. so I would like to here any local hunting reports you will share. I have been out on the wheeler putting on lots of miles looking for grouse, and I do have to say I have been seeing plenty. the only problem, it seems my barrel must be bent, I can't seem to hit anything.🙄 but its fun to be outdoors even though my aim is off.

I was up in Itasca county a week ago. Seen some grouse, but heard more. You had a split second to shoot or they'd disappear in the underbrush. Lots of foliage at that point.  Did see a bear though. That was cool!!👍

I thought Blandin locked all their land down to lease users only?  It's been a tough hunt out there.

that may be potlatch lands. I have hunted blandin land there for years, and have seen plenty of birds this year there. I forgot about the RGS hunt they do every year hear and north of grand rapids, its never very good after they hit the woods with 3 dogs per hunter as it seems.🙄

You might be right about it being Potlatch.  Yeah once a dog goes through you may as well head some where else.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
