Starting to see some small lakes capping in the Little Falls area.  Everyone is getting restless for sure.  I expect to at least see spud checks by this weekend (won’t be me) but I don’t THINK we’ll be ready for walking out by the weekend.

Looking at the forecast for the next week we won’t be making anything.  Probably losing and hopefully not all of it.

Bah!  I’m just talking about my neck of the woods.  I haven’t paid much attention to what’s happening north of the Brainerd line.

I checked a couple other small lakes tonight over toward Mille Lacs after work and they were worse off but they have some deeper water to ‘em.  Walkable near shore but either open or just skimmed over in the fishing areas.  Those will probably open back up to the first ice line over the next few days.  I’m writing those off till after Christmas unless temps take a severe nosedive.

wednesday I drove up to backus from Elk River along 10 and saw one portable out on Crow Wing Lake and other than that most lakes appeared to have for the most part just skimmed over.  the loop home from backus i went through crosslake and then over to 169 along mille lacs and there were some small lakes frozen over but did not see a sole out on them.

Try a lake in the canyon area the other day. Solid 4-5" most of the way out,  but got close to middle of the lake, chisel went thru on second hit. Looked like maybe 2",  decided to turn around and head back to shore.

A few of the wright county lakes I checked on Sunday were between 2.5 to 3 inches. one lake was told that is was 3.5 inches. might try to sneak there tomorrow afternoon and check it for my self and spud out to the one 24 foot hole. there was like 6 people out there when I checked it. Pelican at the old access off 117 had three people out northern fishing that small bay when I stopped by there.

By this date most years, I'm out on the ice somewhere with a few outings under my belt. I normally fish frequently until about mid-January when all the guys with big trucks and wheelhouses take over and I start to dream of spring. The ice fishing season that I love starts and ends early.

This year has just been so weird that I haven't rallied any enthusiasm and I've felt no temptation to go risk my life for an early fish.

Your reports are helping a little. Seeing that drill cut a hole brought back some spark.

Maybe I'll pick an early ice spot to check sometime next week. Everybody be careful, but keep reports coming!

Well been bouncing around in a few different areas last two weeks fishing talking to buds fishing and checking ice conditions. We are getting there slowly but surely!  Locally Mayhew 2-3 inchess, Briggs 3 inches, LIttle Rock open -5 inches, Horseshoe chain 3-4 inches with current areas still open. Some smaller lakes in the Sauk Centre area 3-5 inches. RIce lake 3-4 inches,.There is still alot of sketchy ice out there so use extrem caution yet this week should help stiffen things up !

Was up on myrtle lake east of Orr, six inches of ice, guys already on utv's and pulling out a maybe 6x12 wheel house with a utv. The ice was going crazy as they drove by me.  Not even a nibble for fish with only three lookers on the vexilar.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
