I was on LOW a few weeks ago and cought a 26.5 long walleye with a 16.75 inch girth. am not sure on how much it would weight can somebody help me out?

Posted

Far from exact, but I have always started at 25" equals 5#'s and then add a pound per inch. I have never gotten them longer than 29", but it is pretty accurate to that point. Once you get over 30", my guess is that it may become less accurate. Also, if you get Fat Albert, would obviously be bigger. I do think there is a mathematical formula using girth but I do not carry a calculator when fishing (even though I am a CPA) so never learned it!

I read this in a fishinf magazine awhile back an easy way to determine weight of a walleye. Take the length x length x length and then divide that by 3,500. So the weight of your fish would be 5.32 pounds.<P>Milkdud

That is a aweful big girth for a fish that long. <P>6.5-7 would be the norm for a fish that length.<P>It could weight up to 8.5 with a girth that big.

My formula is right for a walleye but once again as others have stated girth is not included in this formula so if you have a really fat fish obviously your data will be a little off.

I found this web site that can estimate fish weight for you. According to this with the girth includes this was a 9 plus pound fish.<P><A HREF="http://www.walleyequest.com/walleye_weight_calculator.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.walleyequest.com/walleye_weight_calculator.html</A>

Here is the conversion table I have seen many times in the past. I haven't personally seen one taking girth into consideration. If I find one, I will post it here...<P>Walleye: length x length x length / 2,700<BR>Pike: length x length x length / 3,500<BR>Sunfish: length x length x length / 1,200<BR>Bass: length x length x girth / 1,200<BR>Trout: length x girth x girth / 800<BR>

I found the magazine issue that I got the formula for finding the weight for a walleye (2000 Field and Stream) Check it out.<P><A HREF="http://www.hatchetlake.com/island_life/newsV4.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.hatchetlake.com/island_life/newsV4.html</A>

hunter, I have a 25" on the wall I got in the river up there in the late 70's. It weighed a ounce under 7#. Just for the hey of it I put a tape around it and got about 15" for what it's worth. <BR>I'm guessing the gender of a fish gives quite different girths too.<BR>I measured around just behind the pec. fins and ahead of the dorsal, seemed like the wide part.??

Ihave to agree with shakem.Icaught a 31 inch 20 inch girth. Not 8+ more like 12lbs. Must be a miss print in field and stream system dont work on mine at all,3500 must be pike2700is close on it. grin.gif<P>------------------<BR>catch them all big fat an small

5.32 lbs, come on now...lets think about that for a little bit. You're close on your formula, but it must be for a different species. The formula that I use for walleye is the lengh x length x length /2700. This would put your fish at 6.89 lbs, or about 7lbs. Now..doesn't that sound more like it? I'm sure that there's a formula out there that takes the girth into consideration, that would obviously be a little more accurate. I hope that this helps you out.

My buddy had a walleye that measured 23" and weighed 4lbs 11oz. There was another walleye brought in that same day. It was 29.5" and weighed 8lbs 12oz. So it all depends on the girth of the fish. The pictures of both these fish can be seen at WalleyeRetreat.com under fishing reports.

Try this method. Length x Girth x Girth divided by 800. This has always been pretty close. That is a huge girth for a fish that long. <P>Widetrack, is it possible to send me your e-mail address? I have a question or 2 for you. Thanks

walleye central mainpage has a calculator that is very acurate.

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings.  Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die"  so cheery. 😏

Hey now, that one is all you!  Haha!  Don’t make another thread septic. 😉      Yup, the Looper Bug.  I couldn’t remember that catchy name for it.  2lb test is a little crazy, especially for the line quality back then but I can see that being a thing too.  Such clear water.  Looking down the hole watching the fish swim around and them looking back at you.  The further out I got, the easier it was for them to see me.   My one looper charged in when my jig was just below the ice while I was laying face down like you said.  It hit basically right in front of my face.  The fight was me rolling over and pulling it out of the hole.  That was shortly before the guys in the shallows packed up their little black shelters and left with their fish.     So, by the end of the day I learned: black looper bug; light line; conceal movement; and/or fish shallow.  And then never went back.

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time.  Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂   awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug.  I remember the first time I was introduced to it.  There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot.  When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging.  I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies.  I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs.  By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over!  Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️    I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home.  When I had more of the wander spirit.  Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais.  Then driving all the way home the same day.  🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!
