Ice house questions

Recommended Posts

Rynfish

So im looking at getting an ice house that i can also use for camping. However, i have some weight restrictions for towing. I would like the ice house to have plumbing (working flushable toilet) but yet still have a gvwr no more than 4500 lbs. Is this even possible. Can someone please point me in the right direction here?

I don’t think you’re going to find a commercially made house that will fit your criteria.  Not one on a lot anyway.  Plus you’d need to give an aluminum framed house the strongest look.

Start with looking into a Yetti shell that can be customized inside.  Otherwise a complete custom from the ground up will be your other option in my opinion.

I'm with Wanderer on this. Yetti does sell a 6 hole - 8 x 16 all season. Flush toilet, bunk, dinette/bed, manual crank, sink, stove, 10 gal water, 6 gal hot water tank etc. 4000# base weight gross at 5300#. The shell is 2200# probably best way to go. The biggest challenge you will have is water. Black water tank is in the bathroom under toilet. Hot water tank requires a pump. 10 gallons water may last 3 days unless you have kid(s) which will cut that time in half. Water lines are 3/8" so 24 deg or colder you will need constant heat as they will freeze. At 0 deg or below freeze time is less than an hour. After a winter trip you need to drain all water and purge lines with RV antifreeze unless you have a heated shed.

In years past, Jack and other owners of the Landing used to keep the boat launch plowed next door. The last owners of the Landing didn't do it. I've asked several times while frequenting the Landing this summer/fall, and it sounds like they do not plan to keep the lot open either. Are there any other public launches on the lake that are regularly or semi-regularly plowed for people to park sled trailers?

It's truly amazing how social media has transformed our lives.   Seems like not too long ago there was no such thing as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok.    Where did you go for fishing information, research, brotherhood and fellowship?   You spent a lot of time at bait shops, reading magazines and newspapers, or you dialed up into a fishing discussion bulletin board on the world wide web.   I'm a geek who preferred the electronic version so I spent A LOT of time online reading everything I could on web forums and discussion boards.  I came to find a primary home here with Fishing Minnesota in roughly 2000.   I dove in and met a lot of great fishing and personal friends.  I was provided the opportunity to get involved with the marketing side of fishing and learned quite a bit about the business of fishing.
I've been saddened to see how participation in forums such as this and others I follow, have crashed with the growing popularity of other platforms.

What brings me here though today is to stop by and say hi to all my old fishing friends.  About 4 years ago I started a Catfish/Sturgeon guide service.  It has been growing steadily each year and one of the reoccurring themes I seem to experience is how many of my guests refer to Fishing Minnesota Dot Com and how they came to recognize me and my activity there from years ago.

For several years this site reigned supreme when it came to current fishing news and information and a place where everyone was here to help and became a brotherhood for many.  While there was always some political stuff tossed in, for the most part it was a place to forget about the world and focus on our favorite past time.    Oh how times have changed.....

I hope everyone is doing well and pushing through all the background noise in todays world.  What we are currently experiencing does not bode well for our mental health and I hope things change soon before we find ourselves in another 1863 Gettysburg.

I'll share a great experience I had the other night with a Mother/Daughter captured by Ben Garving (Award winning KARE11 photojournalist).   He really did a great job in capturing what happens when you forget about outside things for a while and spend time with family and just sit back and enjoy our great outdoors.   No matter your political views or your thoughts on our natural resources and how they are managed, this is something we can all come together and embrace.

      Take care!

Yup, I started it. Seeing people post about water temps in the low 40s, and knowing that there will be a lot of cold temps this week....we may see the small bays freeze. I have a vested interest as I'd like to make it up next weekend, but have strong doubts that our small bay will be ice-free. Let's hear those reports as the lake begins to change.

So the weather really tanked!! I was hoping to fish until November before winterizing the boat.

Anyone been out...either reservoirs or up Hwy 53? Any idea of when landings start pulling docks...probably on DNR site huh?

I'm looking to buy a Ski Doo Skandic snowmachine.
Would prefer the 600 e-tec engine, but will consider any.
      2010 or newer.
      PM with particulars.
If it would help, I have a 2003 Ski Doo Tundra with the single cylinder engine, for trade, excellent condition.
      Thanks
      Jim

Heading up to V the first weekend in October. Aside from the casino and The Landing, where can you boat to for lunch?

Fishing Ottertail this past weekend we used my sons boat with a Humminbird Helix 9 Si/Di - Follow the Contour GPS. I also put my Vex SonarPhone one side mount which links to the Boating app. I recorded a track on the boating app with the Humminbird following a 16 ft. contour. As you can see on the Boating App track with Sonar video, ls off a fair distance from the Bird depth track. The boating app is a great tool for planning, searching fishing areas and fair on  GPS contours. Both Humminbird and Boating use the Glonass GPS system so no differance between long/lat location.

I went on an adventure along the Minnesota river south shoreline, picking up trash and encountering some critters.  😄

looks like there will be a change in sunfish limits effective march 1. article in todays st cloud times said there looking to reduce the sunfish limit on 9 area lakes. those lakes happen to make up the horseshoe chain system. looks like the new limit will go from 20 to 10.   now this is just my opinion but i didnt hear any issues with the panfish population  until a few years after they introduced the catfish to that system.   either way i'm ok with the change!

Whoa, bringing this one back from the dead.   I use Rockys.  The specific model are Cornstalkers.  They have 500 grams of insulation.  I use mine as all-purpose boots, walking for pheasants/grouse and sitting for deer/turkeys.  The first set I had lasted for about 10 years before they started to fall apart.  I'm on my second pair now, year 3 coming up.  I had a pair of Redhead Comfort Airs from Bass Pro for 2 seasons and they started to leak and my feet always got wet.  Highly suggest avoiding the Redhead brand of boots.

I like Danner. These boots tick all the right factors that go into delivering a great boot experience, more here https://bootsgeek.com/danner-quarry-review/

Well, just wrapped up my last day in Grand Marais. All the smaller, shallow lakes are locked up with ice, or will be after tonight. Lots of snow up the trail, but getting around on back roads wasn’t a problem. I stopped and fished most of the trout lakes around the gunflint and arrowhead trails...the ones that weren’t frozen over anyway. My dad didn’t see a single grouse...I saw one at the start of the arrowhead. I didn’t hear a single gunshot while I was out fishing. Saw 1 moose, 1 bear, a few deer, foxes were everywhere! And even saw a fisher run across the road. Saw just about every animal print you can think of in the snow. Still a few diving ducks around, snow buntings and crossbills everywhere. And finally seen a gray jay! Despite the cold and snow, it really wasn’t that bad out. Was a different perspective fishing all the lakes in waders, as opposed to being in a boat.

A huge shout out to Borch who gave some really good pointers on running the raps in our lake.   This fall my dad spent more days fishing from my boat and actually was begging me to go. Dont know if we will be able to do it again but made some really good memories.

And i did this. I wished i could learn not to have this happen. Having to go to the ER was odd with the whole covid thing.
