Well just a little fun survey sort to speak ?  I know each season has different applications techniques lures and I have boxes of gear so I know. Just for fun if you were allowed to take one lure out for each species I mention for all 3 seasons open water what would it be? Here would be my picks.

Walleye- Hands down a #7 jigging rap specifically Hot Blue Steel color

Largemouth Smallmouth Bass- Spinnerbait white

Northern-Red white Original Dare devil

Sunfish- Hook bobber and a worm

Crappie- beetle spin 1 16 th oz Black head white body with red dot.

Walleye... Cashwise. ?

Bass... Who fishes for them???

Pike... Yep hard to go against a red and white Daredevil. Rapalas too!

Sunfish.. after early iceout... No bobbers, flu flu with leech or plastic.

Crappie.. same as sunfish mayhaps a minnow.

Man that's tough.  If making me pick one and use one all softwater season that'll be different than my favorite. But here goes nothing...

Walleye: #11 floating rapala in yellow perch.   Might not be the best option during the day but I know I can catch them after dark all 3 seasons effectively on bv this lure.

Bass:  lipless crank in crawfish.  Can burn this, yo-yo it or snap it.

Pike: Johnson silver minnow with a trailer.

Sunfish: Tungsten Fly with or without a bobber.

Crappie: 2" chartruese twister on a 1/16 oz jig head with or without a bobber.

How about just one lure? A jig...

Without any idea of conditions or time of year. Some sort of jig, always can get it done.

Favorite lure, whatever I'm throwing at the time that gets a strike. Seems that when I use one lure for I think is for a specific species, I catch everything but. I  usually start with a shad rap and go from there, late summer though, plastics.

Tom Sawyer nailed it!

A jig, many different sizes and colors to choose from. You can change out the trailer for fall speed and bulk.  One lure that catches everything.

I hope to never HAVE TO boil it down this far but I think I could do just fine with 2 rigs:

Mini tube jig in red/white

F-18 Rapala in silver/black back

 ?‍♂️  *drop the mic” ?

I can honestly say 3” power grub with overhead spinner for every species listed, since that’s the lure I use literally 99% of the time when am fishing.

  • Walleye - worm on a harness with floaters, red hooks, and a hammered copper spinner home made (the girls like to make them for craft time then feel extra accomplishment when they catch a fish on them)
  • Northern - rattlin rap or flicka shad fire tiger
  • Bass- spinnerbait black / orange blade
  • sunnies - jig / worm pink/white
  • Crappies - Jig / minnow pink / white
  • Salmon / Lake trout - silver spoon

I could go all day with any of these and catch all species - actually pretty sure I have

walleye-1/4 oz roundhead jig with a 3 grub plastic

Bass- 5 inch senko style plastic in Red shad.

Northern Pike- 3/4 oz tandem spin brown and orange spinnerbait.

Bluegill- hook and worm, if artificial 1/16 jig with 1 1/2 plastic.

Crappie- red and white tube jig.

Really, I could probably do quite well with a 1/8 oz jig and twister tail for all species if forced to use only one thing.

Walleye- 1/2 ounce Rattlin Rap

Largemouth- 5 inch watermelon wacky worm

Smallmouth- Peanut butter and jelly Ned rig

Pike- Red and orange 1/2 ounce spinnerbait

Bluegill-pink flu flu and float

Crappie- pink and yellow flu flu float or no float

If forced to a Ned rig for everything surprised at all the extra fish I get with it.

As simple as it is, and so effective. Plain as a bait delivery system, or dressed up with plastic, fur, feather, or hair, few baits come close. All species, any water, anywhere. Presented vertical, dragged on bottom, hopped, burned sub surface, pitched, or dropped in heavy cover.

I grew up fishing jigs in the Mississippi River, fishing them in current is a whole different ball game, but equally effective on still water.

FISH ON!!!

Oh yeah!  another flu flu lover!  I'll second those.  (wait... you're probably my competition cleaning out the supplies of flu-flus at Fleet Farm.  Grrr...?)

I go through a lot of pink flu flus around central MN because of the glut of little hammerhandles biting me off...

Walleye:  simple 1/4oz jig with a leech.

Northern:  casting or trolling a bumpy Gold spoon.

Largemouth:  jointed floating silver/black rapala.  (It doesn't always produce the biggest, but when bass are surface biting, it's just so fun! ?  twitch it like a popper if they're surface biting or else slow/jerky retrieval)

Smallmouth:  if I'm fishing the Missi, Crawler on a #6 snell hook with a 1/2 oz slip sinker.  (I can catch more with other lures, cranks/etc... but I lose so many lures in the Missi, this is the cheapest way!)  If a lake, (particularly with shallow rockpiles) then the surface rapala (same as Largemouth)

Close second for walleye/nort/bass is the Rapala Shad Rap.  Rare that I'm ever in the boat that I don't take at least a few casts with that.

Everything else--perch/suckers/carp/bullheads/catfish/etc...--pretty much give me nightcrawlers.  The simplest bait that most kids start out with, will likely catch you just about any fish any time.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
