Though it was windy, I got in a very nice training session with my 3 young spaniels. One has gone from being timid to openly defying me...that is until she figured out I always seemed to know where the birds are as she ran upfield. It wasn't long and she was quite happy to run with me.

And I had the pleasure of watching 5 whitetails in my back yard.

Thankful today got out on MinniBelle

Minnie-Belle brought back some greatful memories. From our farm north of Stewart we headed west on 100 to 570 north through the maze of gravel roads past lake Preston, great duck hunting lake, to Allie for some crappie shore fishing with fly rods. If we wanted Northerns or Walleye we kept heading north to Minni-Belle. For Bass we headed a bit east from Minnie to Stella and Washington. During our Sr. year friend and I took our Football & Wresteling coaches to Washington for Bass fishing early morning before school start. Wresteling coach fell overboard reaching for a 5# Bass he hooked - never let him forget it. Last summer I took a Sunday drive around all the lakes where we spent countless hours enjoying fishing and friendships. Things have really changed over the years including the Los of a couple of the "fishing/hunting" group of years past. Greatful to have lived that life.

Papadarv and all. It is always amazing to me how my funniest and best memories revolve around fishing memories. I'm thankful yesterday a co worker whom i'm close with bought his wife a rod and reel for her birthday he is not a fisherman but they went together this last weekend. He mentioned how peaceful it was from shore the beauty of the scenery and how calming it was on his soul. I started reminiscing about stories thru my years and you know what's funny hardly any of them are about fish I caught. Memories of family my wife and i learning something together. I won't admit it in front of her but she mastered the spinning reel before I did?. We always remember when I bought a cheap boat we went to a camp ground where they unloaded for you with a tractor well we all got in the boat it started in reverse wide open the throttle was stuck and I did not know it. If any of you ever saw Grumpier old men 2 when the boat motor comes off and bobs up and down imagine what a 1955 40 hp Evinrude looks like? it was fiberglass and the transom was so rotten it ripped off. any way we had the guy with the tractor pull the sunken boat and motor out this was on a memorial day at a campground by Richmond. Lets just say we got a lot of help. Well thanks for letting me go back and remember some memories we sure giggle over that boat though I thought I had a deal for $100. Live and learn.

That’s awesome!

I haven’t typed much lately for things to be thankful for but have been keeping up with y’all.  Thanks for continuing the thread; it’s a day brightener when I can take a mental health break.

I came home “early” today and have some time to sit on the patio on this super nice evening and watch some nature.  The ducks and the song birds are always relaxing to watch.  I hear the woodies peeping near the boxes I put out for them.  So glad they’re getting used!

I’ve been hearing more amazing tales of people standing up and supporting neighbors around here than I have of woe.  Even the people who getting impacted fairly hard are keeping their chin up pretty well all things considered.  The amount of donations coming from businesses and individuals has been humbling.

Like Rick mentioned, gas is cheap, air is cleaner, and I even heard the canals in Venice have cleared up.  What an opportunity to witness what taking care of our earth can really do.  I hope we don’t completely forget it when we’re able to resume our “normal” lives.  I haven’t been on the global warming bandwagon but seeing before and after pics of the air in India says something.  At least to me it does.

Thanks again.

I am so thankful for all the phone calls I received today. 3 friends I haven't spoken to in months, my daughter and my mom.

How many of you are getting more calls from friends and family?

The whole debate on CCP Virus makes for interesting conversation.

Everything will get better. Possibly much better...Lots of good people on this planet of ours.

I'm grateful for the beautiful weather today. My wife and I spent most of the day cleaning up the yard, putting away winter tools and taking out gardening stuff. All the neighbors were out doing the same things and everyone was just happy to be out and doing things. Talking to neighbors we haven't seen much since Dec. Everybody was maintaining their 6' social distancing but enjoying visiting with someone besides family members.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
