Last spring for the first time we noticed birds being blind shy.  We're really gonna need to brush blinds in this spring to see if that makes a difference or not.

I think more hunters are generally hunting from a blind now rather than just sitting on the ground against a tree.  Placing the blind out there a few days prior to hunting will help the birds (and other critters) get used to it being there.  I wouldn't take for granted the fact that they are camo and should just "blend in naturally" either.  Try to make it look like its supposed to be there.  Don't place it out in the middle of an open field so it sticks out like a sore thumb.  I used to put mine in the same spot a few years in a row and I'm pretty sure a few of the toms became blind shy so I moved it into a more hidden location instead.

I hunt out of blinds a lot I put out 4 in good locations travel feeding routes well before my season. . I rarely hunt the woods anymore. Have had a lot more success hunting big green pastures feeding fields and travel routes. But if all else fails I'm not afraid to get up personal with them in the woods or throw the Mojo scoot shoot at them to fill a tag. ?

Wild turkey is tolerable one time a year.  I wouldn't want to eat it regularly.

I have to say wild turkey is my favorite. I smoke mine and love it. I shared some of last years luck with the golf league and it disappeared in no time flat. People who have heard that it's terrible were shocked to see how it turned out.

Smoked a few over years myself dang good. Also ground up a few and made some smoked country style ring sausage turned out pretty good and not to dry as I added a little pork. Many ways to make it.

Wild turkey is very lean, (kinda like grouse).  If you cook them in a mannee to add and preserve any moisture they taste dang good.  I used to inject them and deep fry them in the turkey fryer.  They were always excellent that way.  Done them in lots of other ways without complaint.  Just gotta keep it from drying out.

Luckily I've been able to give mine away to someone that's willing to eat it the past several years but I can definitively say that doesn't bother me.  Its just not very good.  I've tried all kinds of marinades, cooking methods, and other ingredients I just can't get a good result.  None of them were bad, but none of them were good either.  Most people that have never had wild turkey think its going to taste like a butterball from the grocery store which is about as far from the truth as possible.  I did have one smoked whole one time and that was probably the best way to do it but the guy at the meat locker told me to leave the skin on it - which means I have to pluck it.  Plucking a wild turkey is miserable.  It took me hours to do that.  Won't do it again, plus I don't have my own smoker either.  I really enjoy hunting them but I can positively say I am not in it at all to eat one.

I was outside just before dark last night trying to relax a little.  Just before fly up time.  There was a hen cutting up a storm and I saw one Tom in full strut for her.  He never gobbled but that hen was a hoot to listen to!

Just a personal comment on table fare fo wild game: I hope it never tastes like domestic alternatives. ?

Saw 2 big Toms strutting with a group of 15 hens today. Still grouped up they should be starting to split here more and more in the days to come. Couple rain days and some sun will get some greenery going and fire them up ! Strut Zones will start to appear soon I hope

Lots of birds have been visible the last week here.  It is like the just flipped the switch.  Mostly been seeing groups of 3-4 males and 4-5 hens together.  4 or 5 groups on my travel from Cushing to Little Falls.

Anyone going brave the cold tomorrow morning?

Still up in air for us, If Isaac wants to hit the blind I will take him.  Hate to have to bundle up like I am hunting Muzzleloader season.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
