I'm considering the possibility of getting another snowmobile again. My problem is storage. I have no space at home to store a sled and trailer. I was thinking about storing it somewhere near-ish the west end of the lake so that I can pick it up, tow it the short trip to The Landing, and then get to my place. Are there any options besides Vermilion Drive Storage on Hwy 24 just north of Cook? I reached out to them but want to make sure that I've checked out all of my options.

I believe it's Head O Lakes Storage. Might be owned by the resort. That would be convenient, basically right across the road from the boat launch. I'll be driving up in the morning, I'll see if a phone number is posted.

Much appreciated Cigar Guy.

I'll also be interested to hear how the snow/ice conditions are in front of your place.

Will do. Last Sunday we were out in front of my place. Towards shore, powdery snow, about 8". The main snowmobile trail back into Black Bay is hard packed. Heading up in about an hour.

My cabin is right across from Head of the lakes storage, I called them once about snowmobile storage during the summer but he said he was full.   It will be interesting to see what you find out as I wonder if winter access would be easy or not?

I have used K & L Self Storage on Olsen Road down from the snowmobile trail and The Cresent.  I really liked the storage, the price was right and the unit I had was very clean.  That being said I got scared off when someone broke into some of the units and cut half of my lock off (but did not get in).  They have since added a light and I assume electricity, maybe have cameras now, not sure.  You can contact David Lindroth at [email protected] for info, real nice guy.    I originally thought cool, right next to the trail how convenient, well I never did take off on the trail, I always trailered them anyway :-).

I am currently at Vermilion Drive storage, the unit was a little smaller and a little more expensive but as far as I know its been fine.  They told me they were going to upgrade there camera system last year, not sure if they did or not.  I will be checking on the unit in the next few days, I'll let you know if any issue.   If your interested contact Gina Nukala [email protected], wonderful person and easy to work with.     Good Luck.

Life of Riley at the far end of Norwegian Bay has storage. Not as convenient, maybe, but great people.

Thanks all. Yes, I did get a message from Big V. I'll contact them this week.

I'm glad that I asked since it sounds like there are a number of storage options.

I've seen a place on 115 or whatever the road to tower is called..Good sized operation.

I looked on Google Maps. That appears to be 77 Storage where 115 meets 77. It's a bit far away from the west end but I'll check it out as well.

I stored with Oak Narrows Storage and they were great- husband & wife team. Highly recommend.

I had rented a space for fall/winter storage from them and was supposed to have access by late October when I was winterizing the cabin. It turned out the unit I rented was't quite ready yet due to the previous person not vacating in time. I'm down in the cities and rather than make me come back up the next weekend (this was the last trip of the year), April had me bring the Ranger over while I was up there. They were extremely trustworthy and I felt comfortable leaving the keys with them and they parked the unit for me and locked it up the next week. Didn't have an issue at all and they were terrific to work with. I'd store with them again in the future.

That's good to know. Even though it's too far east for me (I'm a west ender), hopefully that will benefit someone else looking for storage near Vermilion. There are lots of good businesses on and around the lake that are worth supporting.

I drove by Head O Lakes Storage today and noticed that they don't plow the driveway to it.  Vermilion Drive Storage is wide open.

Yup - I called the guy at Head O Lakes. He said that he stores boats only in the winter and it's full, so he doesn't plow it out. I'm going to store at Vermilion Drive Storage. I'll be up tomorrow, so you'll probably see me going back and forth a few times!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
