Hello again friends. Island cabin in Frazer / Smarts Bay area. We have used AT and T for many years and usually get decent cell coverage due to cell tower proximity, but as usual get buffering when the lake is busy. That being said, we burn a lot of data streaming tv through our hotspot and computer to a large computer monitor. I am considering buying a 32 inch smart tv, an antennae (not sure which networks would be available) and an Apple TV with storage. By doing this I think I should get local network broadcasts (may even be able to get a cheap portable DVR/ bring Apple tv downloaded from home with content to view non-streamed (no hot spot). Has anyone tried this scenario to save on data and perhaps reduce buffering from a low cell signal?

Check out www.Starlink.com this should be a good solution for you, I've heard wait times are up to 6 months to get the hardware.

Seems Pretty pricey at $650 for the materials and $99 per month.

It is pricey but you are paying for high speed, reliable internet assuming you can get a clear view of the sky (no tree branch or other obstructions). I have read mostly positive reviews but it comes down to what you are willing to do and/or pay for connectivity.

I did order the kit since Mrs. SkunkedAgain told me to, "...stop being a penny pincher and just do it already." I don't plan to stream as we don't have a tv at the lake, but will use it in order to work remotely so that we can be there more. I am fortunate to be in a position to do so.

Agreed Skunked, I do the same at the lake. We too never allowed a tv at the cabin for many years, but as the kids aged (and didn't come up as much) we decided to start watching sports, etc.

I get it. There are definitely times that I feel conflicted, as I'm a sports junkie still holding onto my glory days. It does motivate me to spend a few dollars at The Landing when I feel that I have to watch something.

Either way, good luck finding something that works.

We had a place in Soudan just down the hill from the underground mine.  I installed a decent antennae ($150) on a mast 15 feet high and we only get 3 television channels there (NBC is the only major network channel).  You may have a little better luck on the lake.

Aren't there a bunch of antennas and repeaters on Gheen Hill?    So those on west end might get something from there.

I think the repeater for NBC / CBS and sub channels  is located west of Cook by hwy 73 & 1

ABC and sub channels are located in Hibbing,

I had an antenna on my fish house and could pick up 13 channels, I could get FOX some days if I pointed the antenna towards Ely but I would loose all of the other stations.

Jkrash is right. There’s a repeater for CBS, NBC and another channel

that runs old TV shows and judge Judy type shows near Chisholm. A good antenna can pick them up in Frazer Bay Area.

I am going to organize a fishing club among my son and his friends. Don't how long this will pass, but they seem enthusiastic. They have never tried fishing (typical teenagers - just sit in their chairs and play computer).

I've been in a fishing club with friends for the past decade. It is light-hearted and designed to get us all out fishing every other week during the summer. It is strictly catch-and-release. We all toss in $75 for the season, the commissioner gets a t-shirt made, and at the end of the season we have a banquet with steaks and cheap trophies for biggest fish and most points. Each week we visit a different lake and you get points for different types of species, bonuses for biggest fish of the night, biggest of the season for each species, etc. It's more of a having beers with friends club while fishing, but is a good time.

Find a way to make it fun for those kids and they'll love it. Have them trade fish pics on their phones, compete for bragging rights, etc. Good luck

Does anyone have someone to recommend for mowing paths/lawn on an island (Frazer\Smarts Bay)?

I only have a DR Brush Mower system I am using right now (been through 2 old hand me down mowers (I'd love to get rid off, one is a John Deere).

Thanks for any insight

Andy

We're having daily heat adversey,  20+ days of 90 deg. Hang in there. NOAA and Federal forecast just announced the Midwest has a 95% chance of a January through March La Nina which means a cold winter and above average snow fall. Early ice may be a challange with forecasted colder and wetter October through December.

Looking to get $1500 for it. Delivery is possible within reason.

There are more resorts and cabins than one could shake a stick at on Vermilion. Besides the casino, are there any resorts that offer "hotel" rooms in a main building on a nightly basis versus renting cabins on a weekly basis?

Counting the days, and looking for cooler weather also. As always, your  pictures are excellent !  How is the fire situation, and what is the lake level ? I'm worried BIDEN is going for another lock down, which isn't going to play out well here. Pray for the best, prepare for the worst. Thanks as always for the pictures !!!

My wife and I were out on Tuesday from noon to 3pm. Light east south east wind using jig and minnow. We caught over 30 walleyes with quite a few double headers. The biggest was 23” and another 7 in the 18”-21” range. 10 were in the 14”-17” slot range but did not keep any with the rest being 12”-13”. Water temperature was at 73.5 degrees. Air temperature was at 86 degrees.

Been awhile since any reports so here goes.  A tough summer this has been. Never saw so many weeds yet there is very little wild rice. Fishing has been tough to say the least.  No real pattern, nor walleyes are not in there usual summer haunts it seems. Been so slow we headed up to Leech last week for a Musky trip.   Non caught but four follows,   one on Pelican reef that was in the mid 40" range.  Then back to Whitefish for a few more hours of no activity.  Even the panfish are slow.  Anybody with any better reports lets here them.  Lord send some rain.

Not up there but camper in Nisswa, mn. I bought a really big like 12' foot long antennae on about a 15' pole.  I was only getting about 3 channels in but I bought one of these powered pre-amp's at Fleet Farm and now get about 12 channels and can watch the Viks again! 👍 It helps to keep turning your antennae and running a channel search until you find the right spot.  Good Luck.
