Ice Report 1/14/2020. We are now at 15-17 inches everywhere that I have staked. At this time I will not be expanding our road system until after the latest snownommi rolls thru. CAUTION a heave has been developing off the point just to the east of us and with today's wind has pushed up and flooded. I found as few as 6 inches of ice in that area. STAY AWAY from that point.

I was out there fishing today Paul and I just want to to give you a kudos on your roads and road system. Fished the Northern basin region  all the way to the West and came across them.   For anyone looking to put a wheelhouse out on some great walleye crappie spots Paul has some cuts to some prime real estate many of it still untapped . Not sure if you were out plowing midday today but someone was over by windmill. Was going to flag you down say Hi but didn't want to interrupt a man working ? Looks like the new cabin is comeing up well.

That is way too funny as I believe you drove by me on our road system and I thought WTH I think that is Icehawk but he would have stopped me and said hi :)

@Paul Waldowski

Curious what your road pass costs and what services you might have at the resort?  We’re headed to ML tomorrow but I wouldn’t mind checking out Koronis soon.

Wanderer - Shoot me a message with what you have in mind and we can go from there.  We have road access by the day, by the weekend, by the season and everything else under the sun including pool, hottub and shower access :)

We started in the area I mentioned to you this morning but the small perch were relentless and saw nothing else there. We made a move again and couldn't believe my eyes. 60 FOW and suspended  20 feet up. They didn't just cover the water column between 40-50 feet. THEY SMOTHERED IT. As you can see from the pic, we had a Garmin Live Scope with us. Holy Cow is all I can say. It helped us mobilize and follow the fish but the lure choice and color selection was critical.

It sure started getting busy out there by the time we left ?.

Well before light. Try to be on  ice fishing  before daybreak normally. Early bird gets the worm has always been my philosophy. ? Nothing better IMO than  watching the sun rise a ,hot cup of coffee and fish on my vex its like a dream I never want to end ? I will  fish in midday afternoon if Im on a more relaxed schedule. We can make anything work.

I think the largest was maybe 10". Didn't notice any tullibee cruising through but it's very possible.  Just surprised that if they were there, that we didn't get any.

There was a small walleye that came top side as well.

Smurf, when I was out there the highest concentration of pike effort was happening near the Bible camp on the northeast part of the lake.  Couldn’t tell ya how they were doing though.

thanks guys.

wanderer...........yea it seems like most the pike fishing happens there. kinda why i would like to fish a different area. and i believe icehawk posted something about the point out there was where a few locals fish pike. i did a little research, seems its a good weedy area and if there's weeds there's little fish and big fish eat little fish!!!!?

paul.......... sounds like not many are fishing that windmill point area............. i like it. unless something comes up i'll be out there sat morning!!!!!

Rocks on top and cabbage on the edges.  The north is more of a ledge.  The south side more gradual and more cabbage.  The end is more gradual as well.

Just all depends on your choice of area, which access you go out from?  Been a while since I was out there chasing the fish around.  Although the tullies, do sound like lots of fun.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
