Anyone else feel the ICE QUAKE?

Recommended Posts

I was out fishing the south shore (Slow day for sure) Thursday the 2nd and around 12:30 the ice just shook, not a crack but actual movement that made the water in the holes splash up. I'm 50+ and have never had that happen before and I thought I may just........ (well depends almost would have been needed) myself.

The rumble just rolled on for about 10-15 sec it seemed like.

Anyone else out there feel/hear that?

On Minnetonka years ago, I heard a crack coming across the lake. It went right under the fish house I was in diagonally from corner hole to corner hole. It cracked off so much ice from the side of the holes, I had to clean them with an ice skimmer. It seemed like the house settled 4 inches. I was probably 1/4 inch. On Upper Red with my kids in a sleeper house, another came close and the house settled a little. My kids have sworn off sleeper houses because of that.

If you spend enough time on Mill Lacs you will feel many of them, I have over the years. If you set up not far from a pressure ridge they happen a lot as the lake sheet moves. It's really fun when a crack goes through one of your holes as your fishing!  😄

Oh yeah. The ice is shifting like tectonic plates. Sound like a locomotive hooking up to a chain of railcars sometimes. I've had the water push knee high out of the holes once.

She shook on the lake I was on today love it means she's making ice and expanding. Nothing better then sleeping in a overnight  house and listening to her sing and groan. Some would say I'm nuts but for me its relaxing 😂

Went to Mille Lacs with my son on new years eve about 11 pm once about 25 years ago. We drove out in a plymouth voyager on a marked trail from the west side somewhere.  Hardly any snow.  Drilled couple holes and set up the old portable and got the stove going.  After about and hour of earthquake ice cracking we went home.... LOL man that was loud.

What's really scary is when your way out on the flats and feel that during the day. Only to find your only way off the lake road flooded on the way back in the dark.  Not much else to do but give it a  try or sleep the night. 😬

Got out the last 2 afternoons and did ok, couple nice panfish iced with some good buds. Fun Times! Plenty of vehicles driving around but I'm still full on sledding everywhere for fun. We were able to fish through Saturdays gale with ease using the flip overs and using a good amount of snow for banking.

Time to eat a bit of crow. Del is most likely correct on android cell phone GPS after 2017. My Galaxy J 2017 build has the Glonass/GPS chip set, same 3 meter accurcy as my tablet. If you desire to know the type and accurcy of your android phone, install the GPSTest app from Play Store. It will show you what satellites your receiving and accuracy of your GPS. I don't have an iPhone so don't have info on iPhone Gps.

Could be, I know it was a scout camp.

I said above that’s the lake that smurfy said had a Boy Scout camp , but the more I thought about it it might have been a Girl Scout camp , I’m going back 35 or so years on my recollection. .

Tried big pine today. Plowed out north access. Got onto ice and snow was flowing nicely had speed then started loosing speed and the slush started coming over my plow. Backed up got hung up maybe 150 yards out. Hour half later I finally got myself free. Crossed a 3 inch wide crack and it was shooting up like a geyser. I was wet and cold from hip down. About 14 inches of slush. Got off the ice and called it a day.

I fished it once as a child probably 20 years ago and only picked up a few smallies fishing for walleye. It's ridiculously clear. I'm sure it has walleye in it but I definitely didn't catch any
