Would be much earlier than normal, and may be the earliest I can ever remember.  Normally Thanksgiving is early to be out.  Last year Big Bay froze on November 18th and I was ice fishing on Vermilion on November 29.  But the weather looks very cold for the next 10 days and the lake has already started to freeze.

We were ice fishing Niles Bay last year on Nov. 18th, with the ice being 4.5” thick.  Will be up the weekend of Nov. 16/17 and hoping for a repeat.

Buddy of mine went to hunt pelican yesterday and told me that it was locked up so it's coming fast. 10 day forecast on the range shows highs in the mid 20s and lows into single digits. Guessing I'll be on smaller water in a week and a half or so

3-4 inches of ice on Pike Bay. Good clear, hard ice.

SM - good to see that Pike Bay is building up good ice.  Looks like Big Bay is still open so I was way off on that prediction.  May freeze over tonight, but more likely Monday of Tuesday next week.  Won't risk fishing there next week.  May try out Stuntz Bay however if I have luck deer hunting.

I'd be worried about pulling my rig up the icy landing.

4-6 inches of solid clear ice on Pike Bay. Unfortunately, that will be about it for ice making for now looking at the extended forecast. We've got 1-2 inches snow on the ground and about an inch on the bay with maybe a little more on the way for the weekend.

Does scented make a difference? How about some different ones for walleyes?

@popriveter  Thanks man,  Glad I could get you pumped for the season. It was exciting to get out that early this year. Really sucks this warm weather came in and going set us back though. We were on track for a really nice ice season too. I was out in the Metro on 4-5" for few days last week before it got warm. Ice is still there just looks nasty now. Really bummed. You may have to drive north for some decent ice. Either way fingers crossed for cold snap soon. Be safe and goodluck this season!

@Bucketcastle lol...Thanks Man. There was a lot of ice checking before this video was made too. Pretty much 4-5" everywhere I drilled.

Some plastics will last thru many crappies. Some maybe one. 😁 Slug bugs. Mayflies. Wishbones. Wedgees

Please show some pics of good crappie plastics. Good thing is one scoop of minnows will stay alive forever in the winter.

Yep. Leave the bait home and jiggle jiggle jiggle. 🐟🐟🐟

Looks to be super unpredictable still, I heard a few brave souls walking out of Warrod but Arnesens just posted online that they had ice but now gone with the wind. I would imagine it's a few weeks out as it's a huge body of water

Anyone out ice fishing the bays?
    • Rick
I built confidence in plastics by going without bait. Amazing what you learn to do when plastics and artificials are your only options.
